I don’t do Twitter, but I was able to see the comments….I feel like I’ve been reading articles about him all week, and just got a replacement copy of “Goodbye Columbus” (I own almost all his other books)….I was extremely grateful to him for spelling my last name (“Portnoy”) correctly back in 1969, because forever after, people spelled it correctly. I did have to deal with every person I met in 1969 (the year I entered college) asking me once they’d heard my last name, “so do you have any complaints?” But he made up for it by inscribing a baseball to me in 2001, after I’d thrown out the first pitch at a Baltimore Orioles’ game. I did not meet him personally, but the person who gave it to me had explained to him what I’d endured bearing the name “Portnoy” all those years. It sits proudly on my shelf containing all his books, which I’m hoping to start re-reading this summer.

What a wonderful set of recollections, Mindy! I am also hoping to read (and re-read) this summer. What do you think you’ll begin with? I may start with the nonfiction volume WHY WRITE?, which has just arrived here.
