Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).
Call for pitches from Lilly Dancyger for her forthcoming Seal Press anthology on anger, featuring women and non-gender-conforming writers. “IMPORTANT NOTE: I am NOT looking for pitches from cis white women at this time. Seeking #marginalized writers, especially (but not limited to) Latinx, Arab, and Indigenous writers, refugee and immigrant writers, & trans women and nonbinary folx.” Payment: “The pieces will be in the neighborhood of 2,000-2,500 words, and the rate for most will be $300 (there’s some flexibility in rate for writers with “platform” — I’m sorry I know that shouldn’t be such a big factor in this world but it is).” Pitch window closes June 11.
For Maine writers: “Maine Artist Fellowships are awarded annually to recognize artistic excellence and advance the careers of Maine artists. Fellowships are merit-based awards that are informed by an applicant’s work.” Maximum award is $5,000. Application deadline is June 14, 2018.
Subprimal Poetry Art “looks for poetry and flash fiction that is crafted, urgent, lyrical, compelling, mythical, concerned with spiritual revelation, uses rhythmic sensual, vivid imagery and deals with fundamental truths. We’re looking for work that enables the reader/listener to experience something that they might not otherwise in their regular life and causes them to think. We like pieces that use language in new ways. We have a special fondness for prose poems. Voices outside of the status quo keep us awake at night.” Their next deadline is June 15, for July publication. NB: “If your work is accepted, we’d like to get a photo of you, a third person bio, and (for poetry/flash pieces) an audio (or audio/video) recording of you reading your piece. As you (hopefully) already know from perusing Subprimal Poetry Art, we create custom musical compositions to complement an author’s recording.” Pays: “$20 for each published work that has not been previously published. For reprints, we pay $10. Payment is made upon publication. You must be able to receive payment via PayPal. Please note that we do not offer payment for book reviews at this time.”
News from Barrelhouse: “In our 19th print issue, we are going to exclusively publish work by previously unpublished writers. This is a call for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and comics by currently unpublished writers.” Check the guidelines for definition of “unpublished.” Pays: “Each contributor will receive the standard Barrelhouse payment of $50. Contributor fees for this issue are donated by our sponsor Mythic Picnic, and we thank them for their generous support for new writing and writers. In addition, each selected piece will also be eligible for the Mythic Picnic Prize, a total pool of $500 that will be distributed and selected by Mythic Picnic.” Deadline: June 30, 2018.

826 Boston, “a nonprofit youth writing and publishing organization that empowers traditionally underserved students ages 6-18 to find their voices, tell their stories, and gain communication skills to succeed in school and in life,” is currently looking to fill “three full-time, salaried positions and two Commonwealth Corps service member positions for the 2018-2019 academic year.”
“Triple Canopy, a nonprofit magazine located in New York City, seeks a senior editor. The editor will work closely with Triple Canopy’s editors, designers, and technologists to research, commission, edit, and publish and present new projects in a variety of media and platforms. We expect the editor to work approximately thirty-two hours per week at Triple Canopy’s office in Manhattan. We’re looking for someone who is especially concerned with essays and fiction (as well as genres that aren’t so easy to classify), has a significant amount of experience as an editor, and possesses substantial ideas about the kind of work that Triple Canopy should be publishing.
