Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).
Slice has extended its current submissions deadline to June 15. The theme for the issue they’re planning is “Time,” and it will be released spring 2019. Pays: “We offer contributors $250 for long stories and essays, $75 for flash fiction, and $75 for poems.”
Also with a June 15 deadline: the Paz Prize for Poetry. “The Miami Book Fair established The Paz Prize for Poetry in partnership with The National Poetry Series in Spring 2012. The award recognizes a previously unpublished poetry book written in Spanish by a poet residing in the U.S. The winning book will be published in a bilingual edition by Akashic Press, and its author will receive a $2,000 cash prize.” 2018 Judge: Rigoberto González. (As with everything else listed in these Monday Markets posts, there is no entry fee.)
Postcard Poems and Prose Magazine Fiction Contest‘s closes on June 16. Theme: “Clutch.” Maximum word count: 1,000. Prizes: “The top six winning contest stories will receive prizes in the following amounts via paypal: first place $100, second place $20, third place $20, fourth place $20, fifth place $20, and sixth place $20.” Be sure that you read the guidelines all the way to the end!
A collaboration among The OpEd Project, Encore.org, and Ann MacDougall, the Encore Public Voices Fellowship “will amplify the voices of 20 thought leaders speaking out about the years beyond midlife, often referred to as the encore stage of life. Participants will explore what must change to establish the encore life stage as a time for personal renewal and social good. Participants will be provided with extraordinary support, skills and mentoring to ensure their ideas shape the greater public conversation. We are looking for community and business leaders, activists, entrepreneurs, writers, educators, researchers and other thinkers. We are looking for a diverse mix of people in terms of age, race, religion, sector and areas of expertise or focus; half of the cohort will consist of people of color.” In addition to the other benefits conferred by this fellowship, travel stipends will be available “for those who need them.” Application deadline: June 22, 2018.
“The Center for Fiction, the only nonprofit in the country solely dedicated to celebrating the art of fiction, is conducting a nation-wide search for an Events Director.” This position is located in Brooklyn, New York.
“Politics and Prose needs booksellers at both its flagship store on Connecticut Ave. in northwest Washington, DC, and at its branch at The Wharf in southwest Washington. These are separate fulltime positions.”
Several positions are also open at Greenlight Bookstore (Brooklyn, New York).
