Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Three quick things from this last week

1. The July issue of The Practicing Writer newsletter went out to subscribers late last week. If you haven’t seen it yet, it will remain online until the end of the month.

2. Thanks to everyone who joined us for the Twitter #PoetParty Sunday evening, where we spent a lively hour discussing summer submissions. Check the hashtag for the archive.

3. Helpful hint (I think). I spent a chunk of time on Monday preparing a freelance article pitch, finishing up on Monday evening. I thought that I might hit “send” on the email on Tuesday. Then I wondered if it might be a bad idea to send a pitch the day before the July 4 holiday, no matter how eager/enthusiastic I might be about the topic. And then I thought that maybe I should double-check social media to see if the editor happened to have said anything about being on vacation this week. Said editor had happened to post vacation photos. So that settled it. I’ll just sit tight with the pitch for a little while more. I think it makes sense. Use that experience/example for what it may be worth!

To my fellow Americans: Here’s to a meaningful July 4 holiday for us all.

  1. Happy 4th of July, Erika. I’ve also heard that it’s best to send important emails Sunday night so it appears at the top of the person’s inbox Monday work morning.

Maybe…but I don’t know if they’d want to see a whole pile of things waiting for them, either. It’s tough to know!
