Monday Markets and Jobs for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee, paying competitions, contests, and calls for submissions—plus jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction). These posts are intended to complement/supplement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter (current issue here).

  • Closing soon (August 31): submissions window for poetry/fiction/nonfiction at The Spectacle, which is “based out of the English, Creative Writing, and Visual Art departments at Washington University in St. Louis.” Pays: “Publication in Issue No. 6 includes a $50 honorarium.”
  • Similarly, here’s a residency program deadline approaching: “The project Prague – City of Literature offers since October 2015 residency stays for foreign writers and translators. There are six residencies available every year, each lasts two months; the selection process happens during August and September.” The current application deadline is August 31, “12 am CET.” NB: “The accommodation and travel expenses are covered by the receiving organization; the residents will also receive a scholarship of €600 per month.”
  • Also due by August 31: scholarship applications for Hugo House courses in Seattle.
  • Closing September 1: submissions for the apt print annual. NB: “Print annuals are dedicated entirely to long-form work.” Word-count ranges are included in the guidelines. Pays: “All contributors with work featured in print issues will receive $50 and one contributor’s copy of the issue in which their work appears.”

  • Position at the University of Virginia: “The College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences seeks highly qualified applicants for an Administrative Assistant in Creative Writing Department. The incumbent will serve as the major administrative support to Commonwealth Professor of English Rita Dove, who, as a former U.S. poet laureate as well as a former poet laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia and a Pulitzer Prize winner, has one of the highest public profiles at the University of Virginia. The Administrative Assistant will be responsible for assisting Ms. Dove with her daily duties as a creative writing teacher in the Department of English, as a professor in the College of Arts & Sciences often representing the University of Virginia inside and outside the Academical Village. Responsibilities will also include assisting with Ms. Dove’s professional ventures as a writer and sought-after lecturer; activities that further on a national and international level both her academic and literary reputation as well as the standing of the University of Virginia as a major American institution of higher learning.” NB: Applications must be received by September 6, 2018.
  • Eastern Kentucky University is looking for an MFA Program Specialist who will be “responsible for staffing the Bluegrass Writers Studio office; creating and distributing marketing materials; maintaining the social media presence of the Bluegrass Writers Studio; updating the MFA student handbook; assisting the Program Director in arranging, preparing, and coordinating the domestic summer residency in July; assisting students with enrollment for the summer residency in Lisbon, Portugal; providing technical assistance to online graduate students; and serving as managing editor for the literary journal Jelly Bucket, including all aspects of production and distribution.” NB: “Part Time, Partial Benefits (greater than 20 hrs but less than 25 hrs per week).”
  • “The National Book Foundation (NBF) is seeking a freelance content writer to create a print and digital engagement guide for our Author In Focus: James Baldwin initiative, a nationwide educational and public program centered on the works of seminal author James Baldwin. The content writer will research and generate copy for the engagement guide, which will include, among other topics: the life of Baldwin; his work in the context of the literary canon at large; the historical significance of his writing; discussion questions for readers; recommended sources for additional readings and related media; and tips for promoting Baldwin in classrooms, bookstores and libraries. Candidates should be able to do detailed research work and pull together an engaging and creative reading guide based on an outline provided by NBF. The ideal candidate should be detail-oriented, able to work collaboratively, and comfortable working within tight deadlines. Familiarity with James Baldwin’s work is a must.” NB: “This freelance project pays a flat rate and is expected to take 20 – 30 hours.”
  • “Scholastic’s Classroom Magazines department is looking for a few contest judges to work for our best-selling language arts magazines, Scope, Storyworks, and Storyworks Jr.. This is a part-time gig in New York: “Hours are FLEXIBLE but we are looking for folks to be in our SoHo office and commit around to 10-14 hours a week. Start date week of September 24th. We require you to stick around with us until late June/early July. We are interviewing people from September 4-7, so let us know your availabilities.” Pays: $14/hour.
  • “The Department of English, Creative Writing, at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, invites applications for an Open Rank faculty appointment in poetry writing at the Assistant/Associate/Full Professor level, depending on the applicant’s qualifications, experience, and interest.”
  • “The Writing Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenured or tenure-track faculty position with a concentration in poetry beginning August 2019. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.”
  • “The School of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (IAS) and the MFA in Creative Writing and Poetics at the University of Washington Bothell (UWB) seek a dynamic writer and educator working in experimental or innovative prose, including speculative fiction, fabulist fiction, cross-genre memoir, lyric essay, or other hybrid forms, and in poetics that inquire into the social, cultural, and/or technological aspects of writing. Individuals whose work speaks to social, environmental, and/or racial justice, and/or indigenous issues are particularly encouraged to apply.” This is a tenure-track assistant professorship.
  • “The Department of English & Creative Writing at Susquehanna University [Pennsylvania] invites applications for a tenure track position as an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, specialty in Fiction, beginning in August 2019. Teaching responsibilities include several levels of creative writing workshops as well as first-year composition and introductory literature or genre surveys.”
  • “The English Department at Duquesne University is seeking to fill up to six Teaching Assistant Professor positions to begin in the Fall 2019 semester. These positions will teach a 4-4 load, largely in Duquesne’s first-year core and honors writing programs. Additional competence in creative writing (poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction), professional and technical writing, online teaching of writing, and/or writing in the health professions is desirable but not necessary. Experience with high-impact educational practices (such as learning communities or community-engaged teaching and learning) is a plus. These are renewable positions with the possibility of advancement but are not eligible for tenure. Salary and benefits are competitive.
  • From Michigan State University: “The Department of English Language and Literature announces courses available for the Fall 2018 Semester. The program anticipates that we may need instructors for Creative Writing 201, a general education course that introduces students to diverse genres in creative writing. Instructors are expected to introduce students to fiction and poetry as well as one other creative writing genre in the areas of performance writing, new media, or creative nonfiction.”
