Speaking of literary publicity: One of my current clients, John Sibley Williams, has a smart piece up on Jane Friedman’s website this week offering tips on “balancing your submission budget for literary journals.”
“Very few of the work memoirs published each year are written by women. This wealth of information that we share with each other isn’t making it into printed form. Presumably, either the potential publishers or the potential writers don’t think there’s a market.” So writes Vikki Warner in an Electric Literature piece that caught my attention this week. But part of me wonders if there may be other reasons—beyond market perceptions and pressures—that work memoirs may skew disproportionately male.

Interesting about work memoirs. I have been working on a memoir and have an idea for a second one that is more work focused….about working in book publishing in NYC many years ago. Kind of a nostalgic look back at book publishing in a former day as well as the story of so many young people coming to the big city to reinvent themselves. Gives me hope that this type of work/career memoir is needed, even if it might be a challenge to publish….
