Each week in this space, Practicing Writing shares no-fee, paying markets for writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction: competitions, contests, and calls for submissions. These weekly posts complement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter, where you’ll always find more listings, none of them limiting eligibility to residents of a single municipality, state, or province. (But this blog does share those more localized opportunities, including jobs.)

• Lilly Dancyger is “looking for essays for @Narratively about working a unique/unusual job and what it helped you realize about yourself. Rates start at $300, deadline 9/23.” Be sure to read the full thread for info/instructions.
• From The Writer magazine: “Calling all YA & kidlit authors: We’re currently accepting pitches for our annual “Writing for Young Readers” issue! Send your best story ideas and/or personal essays.”
• Family Story is “interested in both personal essays and opinion pieces for our blog. We’re drawn to the experiences and stories of single and solo parents, blended families, extended family members helping to raise children and caring for elders, multi-generational households, non-romantic co-parents, childfree and childless adults and families, and chosen and non-biological families. We want to know how you navigated fertility issues, foster care systems, adoption, distance due to incarceration, deportation, custody arrangements, or far-away economic opportunities. Have you and your family had to navigate racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia or classism along the way? What have been the greatest joys of your experience? The biggest challenges? If you have an interesting story to tell that you think Family Story might be interested in, let us know. People of color and/or LGBTQIA+ folks are especially encouraged to submit.” Pays: “Published articles will receive $100/post.” 
• “Gumbo Magazine is coming. We’re calling on Black creatives of all identities, expressions, abilities, backgrounds, and communities (including global) to submit for PAID opportunities! Help us expand the narrative.”
• Open for applications: the 2020 A Public Space Fellowships: “The aim of these fellowships is to seek out and support writers who embrace risk in their work and their own singular vision. Writers who have not yet contracted to publish a book are invited to apply.” NB: This is a non-residential fellowship, evidently for prose writers only. Fellowships include a $1,000 honorarium and other benefits. Deadline: October 15.

• The New Republic is advertising several positions—including one for a (temporary) Culture Writer.
• In Houston, Texas Monthly is hiring a Senior Editor.
• At Southern Utah State University, the Department of English “invites applications for a tenure track position in creative writing, with an emphasis in fiction.”
• In Rhode Island, the Department of English and Cultural Studies at Bryant University “seeks a Creative Writer with a specialty in fiction and an additional writing discipline for appointment as a tenure-track Assistant Professor.”
• “The English Department at North Carolina State University seeks applicants for a position as an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing.” NB: “Preference will be given to candidates who work in the areas of science/speculative fiction or global writing.”
• In Sherman, Texas, the Austin College English Department “invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of fiction writing and/or creative nonfiction.”
• “The Department of English at the University of Texas at Arlington invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Creative Writing, with a specialization in poetry, to start in the Fall 2020 semester. “
• Also in Texas: “The Department of English at Rice University has been authorized to fill a position at the Assistant or Associate professor rank in Creative Writing (Open Genre) to serve within an English Department committed to the collaboration between critical studies and the creative arts….We are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate through their teaching, mentorship, and writing a commitment to the inclusion of historically underrepresented perspectives and who bring multilingual, international, and/or cross-cultural perspectives to their work. Candidates whose work emerges from or speaks toward communities of African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinx or Native Americans are especially encouraged to apply.”
• In New York, the Adelphi University Department of English “seeks a published poet to serve as a Visiting Assistant Professor for the spring semester 2020 (beginning January 27) through the academic year 2020–21.”
