Each week in this space, Practicing Writing shares no-fee, paying markets for writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction: competitions, contests, and calls for submissions. These weekly posts complement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter, where you’ll always find more listings, none of them limiting eligibility to residents of a single municipality, state, or province. (But this blog does share those more localized opportunities, including jobs.)

• Re-opened for submissions: Salamander, which “features poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.” Payment: “Though we are proud to pay all of our contributors, we aren’t able to disclose payment prior to acceptance.”
• From Kudrat Wadhwa: “Excited to tell you all that I’m the 2021 editorial fellow for @fullstopmag!! And we’re looking for pitches for the Summer 2022 issue on ‘Cynicism’. Looking for reportage, personal and critical essays, interviews etc. Full call can be found here.” Pays: “All contributions will be paid 100-150 USD, depending on the length and breadth of your submission.” Deadline: “Pitches should be submitted by October 20th and decisions will be made by Oct 30th.” 
• From Sonia Weiser: “Big News! @damemagazine and I have joined forces to create ‘The Newcomers Corner’, a special place within their platform dedicated to publishing writers from all over the world who don’t have any professional bylines. Here’s all the info and how to pitch.” Pays: “Rates are typically $150 for essays and $300 for reported features.” Pitches only from the 1st the 15th of each month.
• From editor J.W. Anthony: “Proto is looking for pitches! We write thoughtful stories about medicine and the places it meets technology, policy and culture. A project of Massachusetts General Hospital. Pay is competitive.”
• From Shannon Paulus: “hello, I am once again/always looking for pitches for Slate science stories! i’m most interested in opinion pieces/weird arguments, personal essays, and stories about misconceptions around health. no single study stories, please. shannon(dot)palus(at)slate(dot)com. rates are $200-$400.”
• “Are you a BIPOC author who’s ready to get your book done? Need financial assistance? Apply for a full or partial scholarship to join the Unicorn Authors Club! Scholarships are open to all genres and genders.” Deadline: October 17. (Thanks to Galleyway for the lead on this one.)
• In Minneapolis, Graywolf Press is “now accepting applications for a full-time Editorial Assistant on a rolling basis until October 15.”  Salary: “The salary for this position is $40,000 annually.”
• In Los Angeles, Zócalo is hiring an Editorial Assistant. Salary range: “58,240-$58,400 per year; DOE.”
• The Ohio State University seeks a Creative Writing Program Assistant. “Target Hiring Range: $18.61-$22.00.”
• “Teaching artists near the beginning of their career are invited to design and lead an original poetry workshop as a part of the Poetry Foundation Library’s workshop series, Forms & Features. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit a proposed workshop on any topic of their choice, as long as it engages poetry in a meaningful way. Visiting Teaching Artists will receive an honorarium of $750 for teaching the workshop. One teaching artist will be featured each month, and selections will be made in six-month installments. The next submission period will open in February 2022. The current call is for an online workshop with international reach. Future workshops may take place at the Poetry Foundation building in Chicago, when we are able to gather safely again. ” Closes October 16.
• In Massachusetts, “Lesley University seeks Adjunct Lecturers in the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences MFA Program in Creative Writing to teach seminars at the January 2022 residency as well as courses in Creative Writing Mentorship, Craft & Reflection Mentorship and in Poetry, Stage & Screen, and Nonfiction.”
• “The Humanities Collegiate Division and the Department of English at the University of Chicago are accepting applications for a Senior Instructional Professor (open rank) and Associate Director, who will manage the Program in Creative Writing, and teach a minimum of four courses a year in that curriculum (course load dependent on additional duties). This is a full-time position with a three-year or five-year renewable term, depending on rank, to start September 1, 2022.”
• “The English department at North Carolina State University is seeking applicants for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing (Poetry).”
• At Mississippi State University, “the Department of English seeks a poet for a tenure-track assistant professor position to begin August 16, 2022.”
• In Pennsylvania, “the Creative Writing Program in the Department of Humanities at Lebanon Valley College invites applications for an Assistant Professor (3-year renewable, non-tenure track) with a specialization in Creative Writing (Poetry or Scriptwriting), to begin Fall 2022.”
• “The English Department at the University of South Florida is hiring a tenure-track assistant professor of creative writing, fiction, to start August 7, 2022.”
• In Indiana, “DePauw University invites applications for its Mary Rogers Field and Marion Field McKenna Distinguished Professorship in Creative Writing to begin August of 2022. Candidates should be dedicated teachers and writers of short fiction who have published at least one book (novel, novella, or collection of short stories) and achieved distinction in their writing, whose work explores the intersections of race, identity and the lived experiences of people from Latinx and/or African American heritages. Candidates must hold an MFA or PhD in Creative Writing.”
• In Virginia, “the Department of English at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professorship in Fiction Writing or Creative Nonfiction, to begin August 2022. We are especially interested in candidates engaged with Latinx literary and cultural production, broadly conceived. The ability to offer courses in a secondary or tertiary field is a plus.”
