Each week in this space, Practicing Writing shares no-fee, paying markets for writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction: competitions, contests, and calls for submissions. These weekly posts complement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter, where you’ll always find more listings, none of them limiting eligibility to residents of a single municipality, state, or province. (But this blog does share those more localized opportunities, including jobs.)

• Closing today: the submissions window at mojo. Payment: “mojo pays a $15 USD flat rate per poem, nonfiction piece, fiction piece, or comic. We know this isn’t much, but as writers ourselves, we like to pay our contributors.”
• Hub City Press will be opening a brief “Friendsgiving” submissions window (November 26-28) for Southern poets with book-length manuscripts.
• The Hudson Review Short Fiction Contest welcomes submissions until November 30. “All genres of fiction welcome, but work must previously unpublished and under 10,000 words.” Cash prizes: $500/$250/$250: “Prizewinners will also be published and paid at regular rate. All submissions to the contest will be considered for publication. Winners will be announced in Spring 2022. Note: only authors who have never been published in The Hudson Review (and are not friends, family etc. of editors and advisory editors) are eligible.” NB: I have not located this specific announcement on the journal’s own website; contact the individual listed in the announcement that I’ve linked to with any questions you may have.
• Until December 1, Catapult is taking pitches/submissions for an upcoming “Education Week” installment of its “Don’t Write Alone” series. Their specific interests are detailed in the announcement. “Please submit only one pitch or draft at a time; drafts should be no more than 2,000 words. We pay for all pieces that we publish.” (Thanks to Minorities in Publishing for the tip about this one.)
• The New Literary Project is considering applications “for 2022 Jack Hazard Fellowships for Creative Writers Teaching High School. This is an innovative and unique opportunity open for the first time to an underserved, and deserving, community of writers….The New Literary Project expects to award in Spring 2022 nine $5,000 Summer 2022 Hazard Fellowships to California high school-based writers. Fellowships are awarded annually, and in subsequent years we will consider applications from writers who teach high school anywhere in the United States.” Deadline: December 31.
• Coming soon(ish): The December issue of The Practicing Writer 2.0. In the meantime, be sure that you’ve checked the November issue for the many opportunities listed there that remain open.
• Tin House Books is taking applications for an editorial internship. “This internship is remote. The editorial intern works 10-16 hours per week between 9 AM and 5 PM PST on Monday through Friday, at a requested commitment of 6 months. Interns will receive $15.00/hour, as well as finished copies of books published during their internship.” Apply by November 28.
• “The American Scholar, the quarterly magazine of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, is seeking candidates for the part-time position of editorial assistant, with duties related to our print magazine, our website, and our social media efforts….Working onsite in our offices at Dupont Circle in Washington, once pandemic restrictions are lifted, is a requirement. The compensation is $20 an hour for not more than 20 hours a week.” 
• The Department of Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington “is seeking a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of Creative Writing/Publishing on a continuing 9-month appointment beginning Fall 2022. The successful candidate will teach publishing and editing courses in our graduate and undergraduate publishing certificate programs, with curricula emphasizing diversity and inclusion. Courses may include The Publishing Process, The Editing Process, Bookbuilding, Special Topics, and practicums in literary magazine and book editing. In addition, the successful candidate will support the publication of Ecotone, the national literary magazine that seeks to reimagine place. Further research may include assisting in other projects, as determined by the needs of the program, Ecotone, and Lookout Books, as well as the candidate’s skills and interests. The assistant professor will join a nationally recognized department that offers both a BFA and an MFA in creative writing, as well as graduate and undergraduate Certificates in Publishing.”  
• “The Department of English and Literary Arts at the University of Denver invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position in Creative Writing and Literary Studies to begin in Fall 2022. We seek candidates whose creative writing practice is grounded in literary theory or history and engages with contemporary or transcultural contexts. Applications from writers who work in multiple genres are encouraged. Candidates should be equally committed to creative and critical/scholarly work.”
• “The Department of English at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in fiction writing with a secondary responsibility teaching at least one of the following: poetry, creative nonfiction, genre fiction, digital creative fiction, or screenwriting. The position is contingent upon the availability of funding.”
• “The Department of English at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for a tenure-earning assistant professor position in Creative Writing (Fiction).” 
• “Colorado Christian University is looking for an outstanding teacher who will teach in-seat literature courses at all levels and introductory composition courses, and potentially serve as Department Chair (depending on experience and interest) starting Fall 2022. Priority consideration will be given to candidates with expertise in creative writing and teaching poetry.”
• “The English Department at Connecticut College seeks a Writer in Residence specializing in prose fiction and/or nonfiction writing for a one-year, full-time teaching position with the potential for renewal at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor to begin 1 July 2022.”
