Each week in this space, Practicing Writing shares no-fee, paying markets for writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction: competitions, contests, and calls for submissions. These weekly posts complement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter, where you’ll always find more listings, none of them limiting eligibility to residents of a single municipality, state, or province. (But this blog does share those more localized opportunities, including jobs.)

• Open until July 31: Ireland-based The Pig’s Back, which” seeks submissions of previously unpublished fiction and non-fiction. We accept work from anywhere in the world but currently can only accept English language pieces. We do not accept poetry.” Pays: “a flat fee of ‎‎€300.” (Hat tip: @Duotrope.)
• MoonLit Getaway, a “journal of artwork, fiction, and poetry,” is holding a Grand Opening Contest which welcomes submissions until August 1. A prize of $100 will be awarded in each category (visual art, flash fiction, and poetry). “Winning submissions and two runners-up per category will be featured on our website and published in our Fall 2025 Anthology.” Evidently open to writers from the U.S., Canada, and the U.K. (Hat tip: @Duotrope.)
• Delaware writers: The deadline for Individual Artist Fellowships is August 1.
• As mentioned in last Friday’s Finds for Writers, I’ve recently updated this list of venues that publish flash creative nonfiction. (Caveat: Not all of these are fee-free/paying, but I’ve done my best to signal which ones are.)

• “The Poetry Foundation is seeking a full-time assistant editor. The assistant editor is responsible for helping the editorial team produce monthly issues of Poetry on schedule while maintaining the high standards of both the contents and format of the magazine. This role has administrative and editorial responsibilities and reports to the senior editor. The Poetry Foundation is a hybrid workplace. This position will be in-person at our Chicago offices three days per week, with the option to work from home two days per week….The salary range for this role is $60,000-$68,000.”
• “NorthSouth Books (NSB) is looking for a passionate and detail-oriented Publishing Assistant based in the U.S. to join our collaborative, international team. This is a great opportunity for an entry-level professional seeking varied cross-departmental publishing experience. This role will contribute to marketing, publicity, sales, and editorial services for NSB and its Spanish-language imprint, Ediciones NorteSur (ENS), so there is a strong preference for candidates who are fluent in English and Spanish. Reporting to and supporting the Managing Director, this role also assists the Senior Editor and Associate Publicist/Editorial Manager. This individual will be well-organized, have strong communication skills, and have a passion for picture books.” Full-time, remote position. Salary: “$45,000-50,000 commensurate with experience.”
• In New York, “the English Department at Adelphi University invites qualified candidates to apply for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professorship to begin in August 2024.” NB: “Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled, but priority will be given to applications submitted before August 2, 2024. Interviews may begin as early as the week of July 29.”
• “The Iowa Writers’ Workshop seeks a poet of demonstrated accomplishment and extraordinary potential to join its permanent faculty. Applicants should have published at least one book of poems and have made meaningful progress towards a second book. We expect candidates to have a deep background in, and passion for, poetry and poetics in English, and to be dedicated to teaching and mentoring emerging poets. Our writing community extends beyond the classroom, and full-time faculty are expected to maintain residence in the Iowa City area during the academic year and to be active participants in the life of the program. This is a tenure-track position at the rank of either beginning or advanced Assistant Professor….The review of applications will begin October 1, 2024 and continue until the position is filled, with a start date of August 20, 2025.”
