Markets and Jobs for Writers

Each week in this space, Practicing Writing shares no-fee, paying markets for writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction: competitions, contests, and calls for submissions. These weekly posts complement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter, where you’ll always find more listings, none of them limiting eligibility to residents of a single municipality, state, or province. (But this blog does share those more localized opportunities, including jobs.)
As always, if you’d like to share a specific opportunity listed here, please credit the blog for the find. Thanks for respecting the time and effort that I put into researching, curating, and posting this information! I do notice, and I appreciate the courtesy.
- From Boulevard: “Announcing a CALL FOR PITCHES. The next Boulevard symposium invites short essays of up to 1,000 words on the role of silences or absences in art. Pitches are due October 31. Selected essays will receive $100 and will be published in our print edition.”
- “The Treehouse Climate Action Poem Prize is given to honor exceptional poems that help readers recognize the gravity of the vulnerable state of our environment.” Cash prizes and publication as detailed on the webpage. Deadline: November 1.
- For those in Queens, New York: “The New Work Grant supports emerging individual artists and artist collectives of all artistic disciplines in their creation of new work. ‘New Work’ is defined as work that has not been produced or presented to an audience before. New Work Grants offer project-based financial support of $3,000.” Deadline: November 19.
- By this time next week, the November issue of The Practicing Writer 2.0 will have landed in subscriber inboxes. So if you’re not yet receiving the newsletter (it’s free!), now’s a good time to fix that. And it’s also a good time to make sure you haven’t missed anything that’s still open that’s listed in the October issue, and/or in recent “Markets and Jobs” post updates.
- In New York, “the NYU Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute is seeking a part-time social media administrator to join their team. Reporting to the Publications Director and the Director of Administration, this individual will manage NYU Journalism’s social media presence on Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Threads, Facebook, and YouTube.” Compensation: “Hourly Rate: Between $25-30 per hour.” Maximum 20 hrs/week.
- In New York, “the Writing Program of Columbia University School of the Arts seeks to fill a tenure or tenure-track position in the field of Fiction. - “The University of North Carolina at Charlotte Department of English invites applications for the position of assistant professor of English specializing in Creative Writing (Fiction), beginning August 2025.”
