Markets and Jobs for Writers

Background of a keyboard, mug of coffee, and wallet on a tabletop; text label indicating "Markets and Jobs for Writers: No fees to submit work/apply. Paying gigs only."

Each week in this space, Practicing Writing shares no-fee, paying markets for writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction: competitions, contests, and calls for submissions. These weekly posts complement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter, where you’ll always find more listings, none of them limiting eligibility to residents of a single municipality, state, or province. (But this blog does share those more localized opportunities, including jobs.)

As always, if you’d like to share a specific opportunity listed here, please credit the blog for the find. Thanks for respecting the time and effort that I put into researching, curating, and posting this information! I do notice, and I appreciate the courtesy.

  • Today (January 27) is the deadline for poetry submissions for The New Winter Songbook. Sought: “poems (any length) that reflect the contemporary experiences of living through winter in the UK in the 2020s. Winning submissions will have their works set to music by composers involved in the project and will feature as songs on the album.” UK poets only. “Successful submissions will receive prize money of £250 – £500 for their poem. The New Winter Songbook project will own the rights in connection with the first recording and initial public performances of the winning poems, but thereafter the poet shall have all rights in respect of the poem.”
  • Acta Victoriana, “the literary journal of Victoria University in the University of Toronto,” is open for submissions of poetry and fiction until January 29. Pays (presumably in Canadian dollars): “an honorarium of $20 per piece.” (Hat tip: @Duotrope.)
  • In London, The Bookseller, “the leading trade magazine for the publishing industry in the UK,” seeks “a part-time Senior News Reporter to join our busy team, working two days a week (Thursdays and Fridays).” Salary: $12,000. Deadline: January 30. (Hat tip: Freelance Writing Jobs.)
  • Also in London, the National Poetry Library is seeking event proposals for Special Edition, “our monthly series of evening poetry events.” Compensation: “We will provide the main event organiser with expenses of £250 to be distributed among the performers. For shared events we will offer £150 per organiser and for Online Showcases we pay £50 for a 10-minute contribution.” Deadline: midday (presumably London time), February 5.
  • In Brooklyn, the Center for Fiction is hiring an Administrative Assistant. (Salary: $42,000.) Deadline: February 21.
  • By this time next week, the February (21st-birthday!) issue The Practicing Writer newsletter will have gone out to subscribers. But note that the January edition includes plenty of opportunity listings that remain open for at least a couple more days. And you might also want to make sure that you haven’t missed anything posted here on Practicing Writing over the past couple of Mondays, too.
