Toward the end of each week, the My Machberet blog presents a collection of links, drawn primarily from the world of Jewish books and writing.
- Adding to last week’s list of current opportunities in the Jewish-creative space: a call for Nahum Goldmann Fellowship applications. “The 35th International NGF will take place near São Paulo, Brazil from August 25 – August 31, 2025. The theme will address the fundamental challenges facing Jews and Jewish life in the post-October 7th world.” Up to 40 individuals, ages 25-40, will be selected; the website includes “artists, activists, academics, and writers” among those eligible. NB: “Room and board for those chosen as Fellows is provided by the Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture. The Fellows themselves and/or the local community or organizations they represent must cover travel expenses.” Deadline: April 16.
- News from London: “Manya Wilkinson has been announced as the winner of this year’s Wingate Literary Prize for Lublin (And Other Stories, 2024).”
- A must-read article by Jessica Steinberg about the new National Library of Israel building, which “opened to the public just days after the Hamas atrocities – and has become an unexpected source of unity for a diverse society craving culture in wartime.”
- Lots of don’t-miss-it-news—including of the literary sort—in the latest newsletter from The Artists Against Antisemitism.
- “I’m not going to bother attacking the idiocy of demanding a cultural boycott of the Middle East’s only pluralistic, democratic society. (Call me when you’ve boycotted the playwrights of Iran, Ethiopia, China and Venezuela…) Instead let’s focus on the moment. This moment in time. Canada in crisis. Canada trying to stand up for itself against the most powerful country in the world. This would be a great time to hear from our theatres, publishers, galleries, film festivals and other significant cultural organizations. As a longtime contributor to the Canadian arts scene, that would make me proud in a way I haven’t been of our cultural scene in quite some time.
