Words of the Week: National Library of Israel

With cautious optimism that the brand-new ceasefire will hold, I share the introduction to something that landed in my email just a few days ago from the USA arm of the National Library of Israel:

Dear friends,

As you know, life in Israel has been upended in recent days and we are, once again, living in the shadow of an active war. Despite the uncertainties, we continue as normally as possible, and are moving forward, motivated as always, by hope – tikvah – in anticipation of better times to come.

For over 3,000 years, hope has been more than a concept for the Jewish people—it has been a guiding light in times of challenge and change. Woven through our prayers, texts, and collective memory, hope has been critical as part of our answer to survival and hardship.

In this same spirit the National Library of Israel is dedicated to safeguarding our shared heritage and sharing that knowledge—not just for today, but for tomorrow and generations to come. This special newsletter is to update you, our friends, and share just some of the ways the Library is responding and initiating during this challenging time.

With hope for better days ahead,

Naomi Schacter
Director of Partnerships and International Relations,
The National Library of Israel
