For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts here on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit slightly later in the day than in the past). But I’ve begun sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.

Please note: These posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. Plus, unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in single city/state/province, these weekly posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).

But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission/application fees, and they must offer payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application or participation fees).

This week’s gleanings below.

• “In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, The Maine Review is offering free submissions from September 17 to September 24 or until we reach our allowed free submission maximum.” This opportunity is open to all writers. Pays: “Fiction and Nonfiction writers receive a $25 honorarium per published flash (1,000 words or fewer) and a $50 honorarium for work 1,001 words or more. Poets receive a $25 honorarium per published poem.”
• A short-fiction competition from Croydon Writers (elsewhere identified as the Michael Round Prize), is open for submissions until September 30. Submissions must address the theme of “Far and Wide.” Prizes: “Prizes of £100 and £50 will be awarded for first and second place. In addition, shortlisted entrants will be offered a year’s free subscription to Croydon Writers. Shortlisted entries may also be published in a planned anthology. If authors agree to publication, Croydon Writers will retain the right to a one-off publication: all other rights remain with the author.”
• Also closing September 30: applications for the Colorado-based Green Box Artist-in-Residence Program, which “offers artists of national and international stature, from diverse disciplines, and at any stage in their career the opportunity to create new works while living in and engaging with the community.” Residencies “are generally 30 days. Flexibility is subject to availability and capacity of Green Box staff, housing, and venues.” NB: “Artists should note that a vehicle is necessary for living in Green Mountain Falls; they may choose to rent or bring their own. Private housing will be provided at The Shed, Green Box’s dedicated Artist housing.” This program also confers stipends ($9,000 for an individual artist).
• Submissions for an anthology to be titled The Big Book of Quantum Fiction will also close September 30. Payment: “$24 USD via Paypal, and 1 free author’s copy per accepted submission shipped separately to your address.”
• From the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts: “General Operating Support for Artists (GOSA) provides multi-year grants [$6,000 per year, for three years] for Rhode Island artists to work toward longer term, self-identified goals in their art practice. Rather than being focused on a specific project, this three-year, unrestricted funding supports their artistic goals however they need.” Deadline: October 1.
• In California, “the Department of English at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Creative Writing, to begin September 1, 2026. Subspecialties can be in creative new forms/digital genres. We are particularly interested in creative writing that emphasizes social justice, especially racial and environmental justice, and candidates committed to undergraduate writing and publishing, including an emphasis on mixed media and/or mixed genre writing.” Deadline: October 22.
• In Pennsylvania, “the Department of English at Lehigh University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with a specialization in Creative Nonfiction and secondary experience in another writing genre (such as fiction, poetry, screenwriting) to join a flourishing undergraduate creative writing program. The appointment will begin July 1, 2026.” Deadline: “For full consideration, applications should be received by November 1, 2025.”
• “Binghamton University’s Department of English, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, seeks to hire a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Poetry, starting September 1, 2026.” Deadline: “Review of applications will begin November 1, 2025 and continue until the vacancy is filled.”
• In Tennessee, the Department of English & Creative Writing at the University of the South “seeks applications for a tenure-track position in Poetry at the Assistant Professor rank. Applicants are expected to have an M.F.A. or Ph.D. in hand for the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year.” Deadline: “For full consideration, please submit an application by November 3rd.”
• Maine’s Colby College invites applications “for a two-year Visiting Assistant Professor position in Creative Writing (Fiction).” Deadline: “The review of materials will begin on November 3, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.”
