Markets and Jobs for Writers

Notice of fee-free and paying opportunities for writers.

For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts here on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit slightly later in the day than in the past). But some months ago, I began sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.

Please note: These posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. Plus, unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in single city/state/province, these weekly posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).

But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission/application fees, and they must offer payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application or participation fees).

This week’s gleanings below.

  • October 31 is the closing date for this submissions window at Sick, which“publishes work from folks who are sick/chronically ill/mentally ill/disabled. We are looking for writing & artwork that thinks through the experience of illness and disability in new ways, or explores a topic that is framed by this experience. We do not have themes for our issues. While contributions are only accepted from chronically ill and disabled people, your work does not have to explicitly be about illness or disability, but informed by it in some way.” Pays: $.12/word for prose and $90 for poetry/artwork, via Paypal.
  • The Hugo Burge Foundation is offering a residency (January 7-February 4, 2026) “for a UK-based writer of children or young adult literature. This is a fully funded residency that includes exclusive studio space, accommodation in one of our Hobbit Pods, and a weekly stipend of £350.” Applications close November 2.
  • “The Derricotte/Eady Prize, named after Cave Canem co-founders Toi Derricotte and Cornelius Eady, spotlights chapbook-length manuscripts by Black poets. Awarded to one poet annually, the Derricotte/Eady Prize recipient receives a monetary prize, the publication of their manuscript through O, Miami Books, a residency at The Writer’s Room at The Betsy Hotel-South Beach, and a featured reading at the O, Miami Festival in April.” Eligibility: “All unpublished, original collections of poems written in English by Black poets. Please note that this is not a first book award. Cave Canem defines Black poets as any poet who identifies as a member of the African Diaspora.” Deadline: November 3.
  • Open until November 9: submissions for the third issue of ephemeral magazine (from ephemeral collective). Theme: “friend or foe.” NB: “Writers must be currently based in, or have spent significant time in, the Colorado Plateau region. We accept any media that can be published in print: writing, photography, art, what-have-you.” Payment: “We use all profits made from the magazine to pay our contributors between $50-$100 per piece.”
