Markets and Jobs for Writers

For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit later in the day than in the past). But just about a year ago, I began sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.
Reminder: These weekly posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition.
Another note about these Monday posts: Unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in a single city/state/province, these posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).
But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission or application fees, and they must offer (specified) payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application orparticipation fees).
One more reminder: Quite a few of the opportunities listed in the March newsletter (and recent weekly updates) remain open for submissions and applications.
And now—the latest gleanings:
- Slated to open for applications March 25: the Susan Kamil Emerging Writers Prize. Open to “any unpublished writer over the age of 18 working on a full-length manuscript, graphic novel, or book-length comic who is also currently employed at (or owns) a physical book or comic store in the U.S. or its territories…with a minimum of three months of continuous book or comic store employment.” This year, the program will confer “five $10,000 prizes” to provide financial support.
- Canada-based Acta Victoriana, “the literary journal of Victoria College,” is openfor poetry and prose submissions until March 26. Pays: $20. Submission form.
- Three, “a digital literary magazine of concise stories from women’s lives,” is open for submissions (fiction or non-fiction) on the theme of “boundless” until March 31. Pays: $25.
- If you happen to live in the Florida Keys at least six months each year, the Anne McKee Artists Fund Standard Grant, for “established & emerging Florida Keys artists, writers or performers needing to fund a project – up to $3000,” is open for applications until March 31.
