For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still access them (albeit later in the day than in the past). But a little over a year ago, I began sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.

Reminder: These weekly posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. And in case you missed it, the May issue—packed with 50+ opportunities—went out to all subscribers late last week.

Another note about these Monday posts: Unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in a single city/state/province, these posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).

But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission or application fees, and they must offer (specified) payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application or participation fees).

And now—the latest gleanings:

• DEADLINE EXTENDED! Applications for the Miami Book Fair’s two Emerging Writer Fellowships for 2026-2027 (the Emerging Writer Fellowship for Prose and the Mindich Fellowship for Jewish Fiction; these were listed in our April newsletter) are now welcome until May 31.
• Until May 15, In A Flash will be open for flash nonfiction on the theme of “goodbyes” (guidelines). Pays: $25.
• From Poetry magazine: “We would love to consider your poems for a special issue of Poetry magazine honoring one of our great literary cities: Chicago. This open call is for poets born and/or raised in the city and writers who have lived in Chicago for around seven years at some point in their lives. Those seven years don’t need to be continuous. We are looking for poems that engage with Chicago’s history, its architecture and art, the geography, the parks and landmarks, other Chicagoans, the restaurant at the end of your street—anything about the 77 neighborhoods, or those outposts serviced by the CTA, that makes Chicago the city of Big Shoulders. We welcome poems in a variety of forms, including lineated poems, prose poems, video poems, and visual poems. The issue is planned for 2027 in honor of Chicago’s 190th birthday and Poetry’s 115th year of publication in this city.” Pay rates are detailed on their guidelines page. Deadline: May 15.
• The Veterans’ Writing Contest hosted by The Iowa Review is open for submissions until May 31. It was “founded with a gift from the family of Jeff Sharlet (1942–69), a Vietnam veteran and antiwar writer and activist. It has continued to be supported thanks to funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Amy B. Kretkowski Veterans Law Office, and donors to One Day for Iowa 2024. The contest is open to U.S. veterans and active duty personnel writing in any genre and about any subject matter.” Prizes: “First place: $1,000 plus publication in an issue of The Iowa Review. Second place: $750. Three runners-up: $500 each.”
• “Teachers & Writers Magazine is accepting applications for the Teachers & Writers Editorial Fellowship until May 31, 2026. The fellow will join the T&W Editorial Board and assist with the production of Teachers & Writers Magazine. The Editorial Fellowship is intended to give graduate students, recent graduates, and early-stage professionals with equivalent experience an opportunity to gain editorial and publishing experience through hands-on assignments and mentorship from skilled editors.” This is advertised as a remote fellowship with a time commitment of “approx. 12 hours per month.”
• “The Poetry Foundation is seeking a full-time editorial content producer. The editorial content producer supports and expands Poetry magazine’s digital publishing through the production and management of multimedia content for the Poetry Foundation website and other digital channels. The key function of this role is to expand the experience of Poetry magazine into compelling, accessible digital forms that enrich the audience experience….This position will be in-person at our Chicago offices three days per week, with the option to work from home two days per week. The salary range for this role is $90,000 – 100,000.” Deadline: “Priority consideration will be given to applications received by May 11, 2026.”
• HerStry, which “wants to get every woman writing, talking, and sharing her story,” is hiring a Social Media Coordinator. This is “a part time contract job capped at 15 hours per month.” Pay rate (per comments on this Instagram post) is $15/hour. Apply by June 1.
• “Are you passionate about helping people connect with Jewish life and learning? Hundreds of thousands of people each month depend on My Jewish Learning’s offerings — including our articles, essays, email series, classes and our daily Kaddish gathering — as one of their main connections to Jewish tradition. Now we’re looking for an [Editorial Assistant] to help us make it all happen.” NB: This is a full-time position—“preferred: in office 2-3 times/week in New York; remote also possible.” Salary: $55,000 to $60,000. No deadline indicated.
• “The Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) is seeking a Publishing Assistant for CCAR Press, a division of the CCAR and the primary publisher of the Reform Movement. CCAR Press publishes books, ebooks, apps, a journal, certificates, and Visual T’filah to serve Reform Jews and the wider Jewish community. This position will contribute to a range of publications, with a primary focus on a major new Reform Torah commentary….This position is hybrid (four days remote, one day in the office per week) for employees in the New York City metro area, or fully remote for those elsewhere.” Salary range: “$50–$60K.” No deadline indicated.
• “The School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, the state’s public liberal arts university, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing specializing in fiction. We seek a dynamic teacher-writer committed to fiction and poetry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentoring undergraduate writers.” Salary: $45,000. Deadline: “Application review begins immediately and will continue until position is filled.”
