Markets and Jobs for Writers

For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit later in the day than in the past). But not too long ago, I began sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.
Reminder: These weekly posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. The June issue went out to all subscribers literally just yesterday. It’s packed with 55+ opportunities, and if you haven’t had a chance to peruse it yet, you’ll find it on Substack as well.
Another note about these Monday posts: Unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in a single city/state/province, these posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).
But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission or application fees, and they must offer (specified) payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application or participation fees).
And now—the latest gleanings.
- Today (June 1) is the deadline for submissions at Breath & Shadow, which “only accepts work from people with disabilities.” Note that “Breath & Shadow accepts poetry and fiction on any topic. These pieces do not have to relate to disability. Essays, reviews, articles, and other forms of nonfiction must relate to disability in some way.” They’ll consider reprints. Pays: “$40 per Long Fiction/Nonfiction and $25 per Poem/Short Prose.” (Hat tip: The Freelance Writing Network.)
- This one’s for those in the California Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Sonoma: The California Arts Council (CAC)’s Individual Artist Fellowships are open for applications until June 5. Fellowship amounts range from $5,000-$50,000 (“tiered” for “emerging,” “established,” and “legacy” artists).
- Due to a region-based administrative structure, those in the California Capital Region (Alpine, El Dorado, Sacramento, Solano, or Yolo County) should apply for the same fellowship program as immediately above, here, with the same June 5 deadline.
- And for those in California’s Central Valley and Eastern Sierra region (Amador, Calaveras, Fresno, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mariposa, Merced, Mono, San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Tulare and Tuolumne counties), check here for the same CAC Individual Artist Fellowship program—your deadline is a tad later: June 12.
- This one, from Artist Trust, is for Washington State residents: “Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) are unrestricted project-based grants of $2,500 awarded to 65 artists working in all disciplines across Washington State. We are proud to announce that Grants for Artist Projects (GAP) awards has been increased from $1,500 to $2,500 in 2026, better meeting the real needs of artists across Washington State. Funding may be used for but not limited to artist fees, materials, equipment, space rental, travel for research, documentation, professional development opportunities, marketing and promotion, support to continue a current project, support to start a new project, and many other needs related to your project.” Apply by June 22.
- “The Creative Writing Program of the Department of English and Comparative Literature (ECL) at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill invites applications for professor of poetry writing for a one-year teaching appointment, for the 2026-2027 academic year, which begins in August 2026. The purpose of the Kenan Visiting Writer program is to provide an early-career writer with one published book the opportunity to teach enthusiastic and talented undergraduate students while working on a second book.” Compensation: A “hiring range” of $40,000 is cited. Deadline: June 5.
- “The Department of English in the College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Virginia seeks an Assistant Director of Creative Writing to serve as the program’s main administrator and operational center of a lively, close-knit community.” Salary: “$70,000 – 80,000.” Deadline: “Review of applications will begin after June 5, and the position is open until filled.”
- In Colorado, Denver Quarterly is hiring a part-time Managing Editor. Compensation segments/details are detailed within the job announcement. Apply by June 8.
- In New York, the American Academy of Arts and Letters is advertising a “part-time, temporary opportunity: June 1, 2026 – May 31, 2027” for an Administrative Assistant. “1-day per week during business work hours (9:30am–5pm, Monday–Friday). Remote with occasional in-person work required. $30/hour.” Deadline: “Applications will be considered on a rolling basis; the position will be open until it is filled.”
- Philadelphia’s Holy Family University’s Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing “seeks experienced writers to serve as part-time core faculty. In this role, faculty members guide graduate students through one-on-one mentoring relationships that are central to the program’s pedagogy. Core faculty provide rigorous, craft-focused instruction in their area of genre expertise, support the development of each student’s sustained writing practice, and contribute to the community and intellectual life of the program at two annual residencies. The program offers concentrations in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, young adult fiction and nonfiction, literary genre writing (fantasy, science fiction, mystery), and travel and food writing. Mentors are matched with students in their primary genre.” Compensation: “competitive with peer low-residency MFA programs.” No deadline indicated.
