They are conquered over and over by the empires of every era, the ones that control huge swaths of territory and leave behind monuments to their own greatness: Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Seleucids, Ptolemies, Romans, Byzantines, Umayyads, Abbasids, Fatimids, Crusaders, Mamluks, Ottomans, Britons.
