Monday Markets/Jobs/Opportunities for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Launching this week: the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Emergency Relief Fund. “The Andy Warhol Foundation, Robert Rauschenberg Foundation and Lambent Foundation (a project of the Tides Center) have established an Emergency Relief Fund, administered by NYFA to assist artists with damages and losses as a result of Hurricane Sandy. Eligible artists can be working in any discipline and reside in Connecticut, New Jersey or New York. Damages are broadly defined and include, but are not limited to: damage to physical work; damage to homes/studios/other facilities; loss of equipment or supplies; loss of income, and reimbursement for cancelled performances/appearances/engagements. We anticipate the overwhelming majority of grants will range between $1,000 and $5,000, but there may be extraordinary circumstances in which slightly smaller or larger grants might be made.” Applications will be made available on November 21.
  • Bethesda Magazine and the Bethesda Urban Partnership are partnering to sponsor a short story and essay contest.” Cash prizes, publication, and other goodies will be awarded in each genre (and for high-school age writers and writers 18 and over “and finished with high school”). There’s no entry fee, and the deadline is January 25, 2013. Note that essay submissions (500 words, maximum) may come from writers resident in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington, DC; short-story submissions (4,000 words, maximum) are limited to residents of Montgomery Country, Maryland, and Upper NW, DC (ZIP codes 20015 and 20016).
  • From the U.K.: “Booktrust is looking for paid freelance reviewers to write book recommendations for our site on books from contemporary fiction to Young Adult fiction to crime to translated fiction to short stories to non-fiction. We cover a wide range of books.”
  • “Mediabistro is looking for a dynamic, spirited instructor to teach a food blogging class online this March. Class meets over 6 weeks and will teach students how to design, promote, and maintain a blog dedicated to food.” (NB: Site registration required to view full ad.)

  • New scholarship opportunity: “The second annual River Teeth Nonfiction Conference [takes place in Ashland, Ohio, in May] is pleased to announce that it is offering four merit-based scholarships for students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate writing programs. Students interested should complete the registration form and scholarship application by March 1, 2013. The registration fee is waived for scholarship applicants. Scholarships cover the cost of registration for the conference. Recipients are responsible for all other expenses (travel, room and board, etc.). The scholarship does not cover the cost of a full-length manuscript consultation.”
  • Do you have some design skills? Ardor, a new literary magazine, is looking for a logo. “We’re looking for something no larger than 4”x 4” and the winning submission will successfully integrate our publication name into the design. Submit your best work by the end of the day on Friday, November 30, 2012. We’ll announce the winner by the end of December and feature the winning logo in our first three issues of ARDOR, crediting you as the designer with a brief bio. The designer of the winning logo will receive a token payment of $20 upon publication of our first issue.” (via The Review Review)
  • The October issue of The Practicing Writer, filled with information on no-fee writing contests and competitions and paying calls for submission, went out to subscribers this weekend.
  • Attention, Minnesota writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. You may be eligible to apply for the Beyond the Pure Fellowships for Writers (formerly the SASE Jerome Grants for Emerging Writers). The program confers “grants of up to $4,000 to four to six emerging Minnesota writers each year….In addition to their grant award, recipients also participate in a 12-month fellowship program that provides community, mentorship, guidance, workshops, and resources throughout the program year….Intermedia Arts’ Beyond the Pure Fellowships for Writers places a particular emphasis on increasing the visibility of and providing a platform for emerging writers whose voices have historically been underrepresented in the literary arts.” Application deadline is 6 p.m. on Friday, October 19. No application fee indicated.
  • “The University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a full-time Editor of Ecotone—Reimagining Place and Lookout Books, an award-winning teaching press, at the rank of lecturer in the Department of Creative Writing on a continuing 12-month appointment, beginning July 1, 2013. This is an excellent opportunity to join a nationally recognized department that offers both a BFA and an MFA, as well as a Certificate in Publishing. Each semester, the successful candidate will teach a course in literary magazine editing associated with the journal Ecotone, as well as another course in the editing/publishing curriculum for either undergraduates or graduate students.”

  • First up: Gotham Writers’ Workshop has launched a “91-Word Memoir Writing Contest.” This contest “celebrates longtime Gotham student and friend Norma Crosier, who died in July five days shy of her 91st birthday….She embraced the principle of memoir – that it is not the story of the writer’s entire life, but rather one story among many.” Prizes: “The winner will receive a 10-week workshop, $91 cash, and bragging rights.” Enter by October 15, 2012. No entry fee.
  • North Carolinians (and Google analytics tell me that there are plenty of you visiting this blog!), you still have time to submit short fiction for the 2012 NC State Short Story Contests. This year’s contests will be judged by Tony Earley. Cash prizes. No entry fees. Deadline: October 1, 2012.
  • Are you a college student with an unpaid editorial internship in NYC in the works? You may be eligible for a nice “trust fund” grant of $1,200. Get to know Ed(2010), and do it quickly. The deadline is October 9. There is no application fee.

  • “The Department of English at Stephen F. Austin State University [Texas] seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of creative writing….We are primarily looking for a fiction writer with a secondary interest in nonfiction.”
  • “The Department of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Colorado Denver, seeks an instructor of Creative Writing with a specialization in Fiction….Courses will include introduction to creative writing (dual genre, poetry and fiction) and intermediate fiction courses (both in the classroom and online).”
  • “The University of Memphis seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Fiction Writing position….An interest in teaching a survey course in literature is desirable, as are publications in poetry that would allow flexibility in staffing. Literary journal experience is welcome.”
  • From George Washington University (Washington): “For appointment beginning in the fall of 2013, we seek a tenure-track assistant professor. The position is open to a poet; strong preference will be given to applicants with a secondary interest, and publications, in creative nonfiction….We strongly encourage applicants whose writing engages African American experiences, or whose writing engages other minority experiences, such as Latino/a, Asian American, indigenous, post colonial, lgbt, or disability experiences.”
  • Columbia University Libraries (New York) seeks a Communications and Marketing Coordinator, it seems that the Los Angeles Times is looking for a Deputy Books Editor (h/t @RonCharles), and Atlantic Media Company (Washington) is advertising for a Staff Writer/Reporter.

  • Oh, is this one, from the Centre d’Art – Marnay Art Centre (CAMAC), tempting! “CAMAC and Fondation Ténot offer each year a residency bursary to one visual artist, one writer and one musician or composer in order to create new career prospects for artists.” The bursary includes a 2-month residency at CAMAC (France). The creative-writing bursary is open to “established poets, novel writers and playwrights.” There is no application fee. Deadline: July 14, 2012.
  • Going on the job market? You could receive free CV and résumé critique from the experts at The Chronicle of Higher Education: “This summer, the CV Doctor would like to help two candidates with their CV and résumé. Many of you may have been on the academic job market before, and, in uncertain times, you may be widening the range of job possibilities you’re considering. So, we would like to help you understand the differences between these two documents, and how to make them effective for different audiences.” They’d like to feature “an M.F.A. looking for a faculty position and for an arts administrative position.” You have until July 9 to submit your documents.   • California writers! Poets & Writers, Inc.,  is currently accepting submissions for the California Writers Exchange Awards program, which “introduces emerging writers from California to the New York literary community and provides them a network for professional advancement. Every third year, writers in California are invited to submit manuscripts. Judges review the entries and select a winning poet and fiction writer. Winners are flown to New York City for an all-expenses-paid, weeklong trip to meet with literary agents, editors, publishers, and writers, and to give a public reading.” They also receive honoraria ($500). Deadline is August 31, 2012, and there’s no application fee.

  • Cultural Tourism DC (Washington) is looking for a Communications Associate-New Media, Literature for All of Us (Chicago area) seeks a Book Group Leader, and Rhode Island School of Design is advertising for a News Editor/Writer.
  • Grants for Jewish Art & Writing in the Upper Midwest

    This grant opportunity nearly makes me wish I lived in Minnesota or elsewhere in the “Upper Midwest” (keep reading!):

    The Howard B. Brin & Ruth F. Brin Jewish Arts Endowment Fund, a designated fund of the Jewish Community Foundation, serves to encourage artistic creativity within a Jewish context. The Fund is meant to aid a broad range of individual artists and institutions in creating and producing works with a Jewish theme. The Howard B. & Ruth F. Brin Jewish Arts Endowment Fund has supported artists and institutions in the creation of art with Jewish content for the past 20 years. Awards have ranged from $500 to $3,000.

    It is the funders’ intention that these artistic endeavors would reach both Jewish and general audiences within Minnesota, with a possible reach to the upper Midwest. (The upper Midwest is considered to be Minnesota, Iowa, western Wisconsin, and the Dakotas.) The arts experience is broadly defined and grants may be given for music, dance, literature, theatre, visual arts and film as long as the projects are not for commercial use. Emphasis will be given to applications from individual artists and agencies within the Minnesota artistic and Jewish communities.

    I don’t see a deadline indicated, but clicking through to the guidelines, I note this: “Generally a request for proposals goes out in late spring with a deadline in mid-summer; the committee meets in late summer and an announcement about winning proposals goes out by the Jewish New Year.”
