Short Fiction for Hanukkah: “Fidelis”

I’m honored and delighted to report that the 2011 “Hanukkah Lights” broadcast on National Public Radio features my short story, “Fidelis.” Local broadcast dates and times vary, but you can listen online any time.

In “Fidelis,” I tell another story of World War II, but this time the attention shifts to the Pacific theater. I won’t say too much more than that for now. But I’ll be posting more about the history and resources behind the story in the not-too-distant future.

Thanks to Stephen Walt (of Harvard) and John J. Mearsheimer (of the University of Chicago), the phrase “Israel Lobby,” often enough translated into “Jewish Lobby,” has become almost as commonplace in American leftist discourse as the phrase “Jewish syndicate” was among the French right during the Dreyfus Affair.

Just one sentence from Adam Kirsch’s superb Tablet review-essay, the general subject of which is “the American Jewish response to Sept. 11” and “the anti-Semitism, trauma, and mourning that still linger after the attacks .”

    From Ari Goldman, an extraordinary Jewish Week article revisiting The New York Times’ reportage on the events in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, 20 years ago:

    “You don’t know what’s happening here!” I yelled. “I am on the streets getting attacked. Someone next to me just got hit. I am writing memos and what comes out in the paper? ‘Hasidim and blacks clashed’? That’s not what is happening here. Jews are being attacked! You’ve got this story all wrong. All wrong.”
