My Nephew Inspires New Thoughts About My Own Youthful Reading

UnknownEarlier this summer, my young nephew told me he had a movie (on his iPad) that he wanted me to see.

“You’ll like it,” he said. “It has aunts.” (It took me a moment to understand that he was not touting the presence of “ants.”)

As I settled next to him on the sofa, I discovered that the movie in question was “James and the Giant Peach.” I had never seen the movie, nor had I read the original book, by Roald Dahl, on which the film is based. (Just a few minutes into our viewing, I was compelled to check with my nephew: “You’re not suggesting that I’m like THOSE aunts, are you?” ;-))

So when this precious child celebrated his birthday last week, I presented him with not just the video game he requested, but also a copy of Dahl’s book. (I refrained from sharing, just yet, my discomfort with Dahl’s anti-Semitism.) And as I thought about the books that my nephew most enjoys reading (or having me read to him), I had an epiphany of sorts: (more…)

The Alan Cheuse Literary Review

Among the new writing that I’ve done this past week is a short piece that I sent in for the Alan Cheuse Literary Review, a project spearheaded by Alan’s students as Alan remains hospitalized in California. I’ve offered to help the organizers as they assemble and publish the contributions; in any case, I will be sure to share the finished product when I see it. (FYI: Alan’s family continues to post updates on his progress on this CaringBridge page.)

New Essay/Article-in-Progress

At long last, I have begun devoting chunks of time to the project I agreed to back in February: a chapter in a forthcoming volume tentatively titled Third-Generation Holocaust Narratives: The Intergenerational Transmission of Memory, Longing, and Loss. My own contribution, titled (for the moment) “Theory and Practice of Third-Generation Writing,” will ideally combine reflection on my own writing experiences and analyses of works by others. (more…)

Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Quick summary this week:

  • Busy times over at the day job. For a summary of some of what I’ve been monitoring, check the latest Fig Tree Books blog post.
  • Working away on revising poems and sending out submissions. Hope to actually draft a couple of new pieces in the near future, too.
  • Saw Inside Out last weekend. Feeling surprisingly “meh” about it. (Similar to how I sometimes feel about a mega-hyped book that I’ve finally gotten around to reading.)
