  • The Hadassah-Brandeis Institute “offers outstanding scholars, writers and artists the opportunity to be in residence at HBI at different points during the year.” Applications are currently open for the 2021-2022 academic year; note that HBI “will welcome Scholars in Residence virtually if we are unable to host them in person.” The program is “open to scholars working on any aspect of Jewish women’s and gender studies in order to devote time to their research. These residencies take place during the academic year and range from two months to a full semester. Applications for a full academic year will be considered.” Residencies confer a stipend of $5,000/month. Application deadline: February 16, 2021.
  • HBI also offers “a dedicated residency devoted to research and creations that use the Jewish Feminism Collections in Brandeis University’s Archives and Special Collections.” Same stipend and deadline as above.”
  • From the National Library of Israel: a fascinating dispatch on “The Ghost Shtetl of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s Youth” (“30 years after his death, the Nobel laureate’s village is being rebuilt, including a massive replica of a synagogue that was never there”).
  • Happening next week: an online event titled “Primo Levi: His Life and Work Celebrated Through Education and Song.” From the program description: “Primo Levi scholar Professor Lina Insana will help contextualize the live performance of excerpts from Shema: Primo Levi from Poem to Song, a project that set Levi’s poetry to original music, by vocal artist Shulamit Ottolenghi with musicians and composers Shai Bachar and Frank London.”
  • And icymi: I’ve recently shared a list of 18 new/forthcoming books of Jewish interest; commenters have already expanded that list considerably!

Shabbat shalom.
