Jewish Literary Links: Upcoming Opportunities/Deadlines Edition
Toward the end of each week, the My Machberet blog presents a collection of links, drawn primarily from the world of Jewish books. This week, I’m highlighting current opportunities in the Jewish-writing space.
- Paper Brigade call for submissions of fiction and poetry (deadline: February 15). Charges submission fees. Pays undisclosed rates for published work.
- Hadassah-Brandeis Institute Scholars-in-Residence (deadline: February 16). No application fee. Stipend included.
- Jewish Futures 2 (Fantastic Books) call for submissions (deadline: February 27). No reading fee. Payment: “five cents a word (for a maximum total payment of $250).”
- Yetzirah 2024 Jewish Poetry Conference applications (deadline: March 1). Charges application fee (“can be waived if this fee is a hardship”). Awards fellowships (covering tuition/room/board) and scholarships (covering tuition); contributors pay in full.
- Green Golem: The Zionist Literary Magazine (new publication now open for submissions; no deadlines indicated). No reading fee. No payment.
Reminder: As I’ve said before, Jewish work can (and does!) find homes in “secular” or other not-necessarily-“Jewish” publications, presses, and programs. So be sure to check out all of the other opportunities that are listed in the current issue of The Practicing Writer 2.0. (It went out to subscribers yesterday; this issue happens to mark 20 full years of publication!) Please note that although the (relatively small) pool of specifically “Jewish” opportunities requires me to include those that charge reading/submission fees and/or don’t necessarily pay writers for their work, the broader newsletter is filtered for fee-free and paying opportunities only.
And another opportunity:
“Witness: Writers Encounter Post Oct 7th Israel” is a five-day (four-night) solidarity mission from March 13-17 for writers of all genres (published and unpublished) to bear witness to the Hamas atrocities on October 7th, to learn about the aftermath on Israeli society, and to lend their support in words and deeds.
