Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Three_PoemsA Triple Acceptance

It isn’t every day that I receive a poetry acceptance; you can imagine how unusual it is to receive three acceptances at once. Which happened late last week.

Okay, technically, it was one acceptance: the same editor accepted the three poems for the same publication (an anthology) within a single email. But these poems were not written as a suite. So it was something of a special surprise to have them all accepted. (And I should note that two others in that batch didn’t seem to pass muster.)

But that’s fine. I’m thrilled to have these three find a home together–and equally happy that I’ve already been paid for them! (Full details to come when I share my July stats over on Poetry Has Value.)

A Short (but Sincere) Thank-You

A quick but heartfelt thank you to all of the readers who purchased copies of Quiet Americans during the second quarter of this year. You made it possible for me to more than double the amount I was able to donate to The Blue Card during Q1.

The Q2 payment went through over the weekend. I’m so grateful, and I continue to hope to be able to offer these sales-based contributions for a long time to come.

Hall_of_FameA Return to the BYB Hall of Fame

It wasn’t so very long ago that a poem of mine won a “Hall of Fame” mention on the Beyond Your Blog website (humor category). This week I learned that a second piece of mine—”13 Questions to Ask Before Submitting to a Literary Magazine”—has received the same honor. (This time, though, for another category: informational/how-to.)

Once again, I appreciate the kind words from the judges–and I am happy to find myself in such good company. Please go read their work, too.

A closing note: The power behind Beyond Your Blog, Susan Maccarelli, has announced “an indefinite hiatus from BYB to spend a little time living the offline life and to evaluate whether I will return, or whether I will pursue other opportunities.” I admire what Susan has accomplished and contributed with BYB, and I wish her all the best!
