Thursday’s Work-in-Progress: Seeking Your Advice

If you follow this blog, it’s no secret that I’m still pretty interested in freelancing, even if I do have a full-time job. The time I have for it is just more limited than it once was.

But I want to continue developing my freelancing skills and practice. So here’s my question: Is an ASJA membership something I should be pursuing? I’m starting to notice all of the publicity surrounding the next annual conference, so I’m giving it some thought.

I welcome your advice–especially if you’re a past or present ASJA member! I’m especially interested in knowing how ASJA may have helped your freelancing practice. Thanks in advance.

  1. Hi Erika. I’m an ASJA member, and though I haven’t taken advantage of it much in the past few years, it offers a few things that are pretty helpful. One is their system of tracking pay rates, writers’ experiences w/ editors, etc. And their online forum is helpful for finding sources and markets, following trends, and kvetching.

At the annual conference, I think the pitch-an-editor sessions are open only to members (but I could be wrong about that).

It’s a tough time for freelancers, with or without an ASJA membership. Email me if you want to talk more!

Thank you for chiming in, Sarah. I just may take you up on your offer for more info!

  2. Hi Erika,

Just wondering what you learned about ASJA — did you make a decision about whether to join?

Hi, Barbara. Thanks for checking in! I haven’t yet applied, and I know that if I want the membership to benefit me for the April conference, there’s no time to waste. But it seems like a big expenditure when I’m not really sure exactly what I’m hoping to get from it. Hmm.
