Monday Markets for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • The March issue of “The Practicing Writer” will go out to subscribers at week’s end, and as usual, it will be filled with information on upcoming no-fee contests and paying calls for fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction. If you’re not yet a subscriber (it’s free, and the subscriber list isn’t shared), now’s an especially good time to subscribe, since I’ve just updated the e-book of “eponymous contests” (also limited to fee-free opportunities) that is an exclusive subscriber benefit.
  • VONA/Voices Summer 2014 is currently accepting applications (application deadline has been extended to March 15). “Any writer or aspiring writer of color is eligible to apply. Prior workshop experience or publication is not required or considered as part of the application.” NB: “Because of a generous grant from the Surdna Foundation, VONA/Voices is offering 50 one-half tuition grants.” There is no application fee. • Via the GrubStreet Rag (weekly newsletter): “Day One is a weekly literary journal dedicated to short fiction from debut writers, English translations of stories from around the world, and poetry. Each issue showcases one writer and poet and includes an introduction from the editor, an interview with the authors, and occasional bonus content. It’s a wonderful opportunity for writers to reach a new audience via digital publishing; all contributors are paid. Looking for original short fiction from debut and emerging writers (Up to ~20,000 words), and poetry from emerging poets. To submit, please email the story or poem as a word document, along with a brief description and author bio to dayone-submissions@amazon.com.”
  • Free master class on memoir writing (April 4) and free creative writing workshop (April 5) as part of Arkansas State University’s Delta Symposium. Pre-registration is required.
  • Paid summer editorial internship at O, The Oprah Magazine. New York.
  • Washington City Paper is looking for a full-time editor to oversee its coverage of the arts, both online and in the print product.
  • Moment magazine (also in Washington) seeks a part-time online editor.
  • “Fig Tree Books is looking for an exceptionally intelligent, enthusiastic, literary-minded, senior-level experienced Head of Marketing & Publicity to work as a telecommuting independent contractor for our Bedford, New York-based startup company that is focused on publishing high-quality literary fiction that deals with the American Jewish Experience (AJE).”
  • “Columbia University and the Pulitzer Prize Board are seeking a Pulitzer Prize Administrator, for full-time appointment, starting between July 1 and Sep. 1, 2014.” This job is located in New York.
  • Also in New York: “The Morgan Library & Museum has an opening for a Manager of Communications.”
