Each week in this space, Practicing Writing shares no-fee, paying markets for writers of fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction: competitions, contests, and calls for submissions. These weekly posts complement monthly issues of The Practicing Writer newsletter, where you’ll always find more listings, none of them limiting eligibility to residents of a single municipality, state, or province. (But this blog does share those more localized opportunities, including jobs.)

• Recently updated: the pitch guide for The Cut, which “publishes stories that address our readers’ lives head-on, with generous wit, honesty, and power. We are in a dynamic conversation with women about the issues that matter to them most — politics, feminism, work, money, relationships, mental health, fashion, and issues relating to equality — and we’re always looking for ideas that add to that conversation.” Rates for essays, features, and columns are included. • For writers (and translators) based in the UK: “The Memorial Gestures Residency Programme will support one writer and one translator with self-directed research into Holocaust Centre North’s Archive and its survivor community. Holocaust Centre North is a museum based in Huddersfield which tells the story of Jewish survivors of the Nazi genocide who rebuilt their lives in the North of England. We care for the collections of over 100+ Jewish refugees and families….The Ernest Hecht Bursary will support the translator-in-residence with £4800 over the course of a 6-month remote residency, while the writer-in-residence will be supported by the Iby Knill Bursary, also worth £4800. Writers and translators are invited to explore our collection by responding to stories and themes they feel have contemporary relevance, and to produce a new text reflecting on their time with our materials.” Deadline: March 29. • From A Public Space: “Writers who have not yet contracted to publish a book are invited to apply to the 2024 Writing Fellowships. Submissions of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry are welcome. Three fellowships will be awarded.” Fellowships confer editorial support from A Public Space editors to prepare a piece for publication in the magazine; a $1,000 honorarium; a one-year subscription to A Public Space; and a guest pass to attend Master Classes.” Deadline: March 31.
• At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, they’re advertising “a full-time teaching assistant professor to teach classes in our Fiction and Creative Nonfiction tracks. Candidates should be prepared to teach a 3/3 load of undergraduate Fiction writing courses at the introductory, intermediate, and advanced level; Creative Nonfiction courses at the introductory and advanced level, as well as intermediate-level courses with a particular focus (such as memoir, food writing, travel writing, or environmental writing); and courses in editing and publishing, which are part of our Writing, Editing, and Digital Publication track.” Apply by March 25. 
• “The Department of English, Rhetoric and Writing, and Media Communication at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Rhetoric and Writing beginning August 2024….The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching classes within the Rhetoric and Writing program as part of the English BA, including general education composition classes. Applicants should be able to teach a broad range of courses in Creative Writing, with a focus on poetry, screenwriting, and publishing. This position will also oversee Applause, our award-winning creative writing journal.” Apply by April 12.
• Brooklyn-based Cave Canem, “a nonprofit organization committed to cultivating the artistic and professional growth of Black poets,” is hiring a Communications Coordinator. This is a full-time, hybrid position (“2-3 days in office/week”) with an annual salary of $62,400. “Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Ideal start date: April 1, 2024.”
• Poets & Writers is hiring a Director of Programs and Partnerships: “This is a full-time position in our New York City office. We offer a hybrid work environment, with potential to work from home several days per week; must be available to work in the office two days per week and additionally as needed. Some evenings and weekends required as programming demands. Annual salary: $90,000, plus benefits including fully paid medical insurance and generous paid time off.” No deadline indicated.
