Monday Markets and Jobs
For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve also been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit slightly later in the day than in the past). But I’ve begun sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.
Please note: These posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to include opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. Unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in single city/state/province, these weekly posts do include such localized opportunities. But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission/application fees, and they must offer payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge participation fees).
Herewith, the latest gleanings:
- Recently re-opened for submissions: Samjoko Magazine, which is “devoted to publishing exemplary work from content creators around the world.” Pays: $20.
- Administered by the Provincetown [Massachusetts] Art Association & Museum (PAAM), the Nicholas Dahl Scholarship “aims to foster creative connections and opportunities in Provincetown. The scholarship will fund a one-week creative experience in Provincetown during the ‘off-season’ (November-April), including lodging, a workshop at PAAM and associated materials, use of a PAAM studio, a PAAM Membership, and the opportunity to visit the Fine Arts Work Center, the National Seashore, and artist and writer studios. The scholarship is offered to LGBTQIA+ individuals 30 years of age and under who demonstrate a passion for the arts in the form of writing, poetry, painting, theater, music or other artistic mediums. The artist must commit to spending at least one week in Provincetown from November-April, at a time mutually agreed upon with PAAM, and have demonstrated financial need.” Deadline: July 31.
- This one’s for Canadians only: Event is open for submissions of fiction and poetry until July 31. Pays (per their website): “$40/page for poetry and $35/page for prose, up to a maximum of $500.”
- The Hippocampus Anthology, a project of Temporal Lobe Literary, is open for submissions until July 31. The anthology theme is “Personal Histories”: “Write, capture, or draw a memoir, a flashback, a feeling. Maybe interview someone close to you; sit them down and let them speak. Tell us or show us how yours or someone else’s existence, stories, and moments have been history—something that deserves to be preserved, written down, and remembered.” Pays: $15. - From the nonprofit publisher Blair: Entries are now invited for the Polaris Poetry Series, “featuring collections of Afrofuturistic and Afrofuturism-adjacent poetry….This new series is designed to provide a dedicated home for this innovative poetic style and to amplify the voices of strong Black poets. The series will be edited by Cynthia Manick.” Deadline: July 31 (or when a cap of 100 submissions is reached.) “Selected manuscripts will receive a publishing contract and a $1,000 advance against royalties.”
- From the UK-based Royal Society of Literature: “We are seeking First Readers to help review entries for the 2026 V.S. Pritchett Short Story Prize. This is a paid opportunity (£1.50 per story). First Readers will be responsible for reading approximately 200 submissions, providing 1–2 lines of feedback on each, and selecting a number of stories to be considered by the judging panel in the next round.” Deadline: August 1.
- “The English Department at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem invites outstanding applicants to apply for a tenure-track position (open rank) in English Literature. The position is open to all areas of English though preference will be given to candidates with a specialisation in Pre-1800 British Literature, Pre-1900 American Literature, Poetry or Creative Writing.” Deadline: August 24.
- In New York, “the English Department at Barnard College seeks a part-time instructor to teach the following undergraduate courses during the 2025-2026 academic year.” The courses are Fiction Writing (Fall 2025) and Senior Project in Fiction Writing (Spring 2026), with advertised pay rates of $13,250 for each. No deadline indicated.
- Publishers Weekly “is looking for experienced freelance book reviewers for both traditionally published and self-published works.” No deadline indicated. Pays: “$25 per review.”
