Markets and Jobs for Writers

For many years, I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts here on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit slightly later in the day than in the past). But I’ve begun sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.
Please note: These posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to include opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. Plus, unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in single city/state/province, these weekly posts do include such localized opportunities. But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission/application fees, and they must offer payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge participation fees).
NB: By this time next week, the August issue of The Practicing Writer 2.0 will have gone out to all subscribers. (And it’s looking pretty good, if I say so myself—packed, as per usual, with dozens of opportunity listings.) So you can look forward to that!
Herewith, the last dose of #MondayMotivation for July 2025:
- A call for submissions from Blake Butler, for his web magazine WANTED: “This call is specifically for previously unpublished authors of prose seeking their first publication. Though this definition can be interpreted semi-loosely—i.e. not including micro zines offline, school newspapers, etc.—please don’t send work if googling you will result in disqualification. No word limit, no content restrictions. Fearless or unprecedented work takes the front seat, though I am open-minded w/r/t what those words mean.” Pays: $50 on publication. Deadline: “the end of July.” (Hat tip: Freelance Opportunities.)
- July 31 is the deadline at NonBinary Review, which seeks speculative writing only, for submissions on a “Solarpunk” theme. Pays: $.01/word for prose and flat fee of $10 for poetry.
- From Locative Magazine (and for “writers residing in Australia” only): “Submissions for Issue 4: Honey // Lemon are open [until] July 31, 2025. Authors are welcome to submit writing that fits either theme, or both!” Pays: $75 per piece of short fiction; $25 per poem.
- On August 2, Sley House Presents, “a podcast about literature,” will hold a one-day submissions window for “a short ghost story, max. 6000 words, to be featured on Sley House Presents this winter.” Payment: $100.
- From the Publications Editor of the California Native Plant Society: “Are you a California-based freelance journalist, photographer, or illustrator—particularly with experience in science/nature writing?….I’m looking to build a stable of qualified freelancers to help me round out Flora, the quarterly member magazine of the California Native Plant Society. Sought: “writers with nature/science-writing clips (either print or web) and facility with reporting, interviews, and tight print deadlines. Bonus points if you are confident with a camera and have experience delivering your own photos.” Payment “varies by piece but generally starts at $.75/word for writers and a flat fee (plus expenses) for photographers/illustrators based on the assignment. Story lengths vary from 250-word FOB news items to 3,000-word features. We also publish a photo essay in each issue featuring location-based or themed coverage from around California.” I didn’t catch any specific deadlines, but evidently there’s still some room for the issue that drops in September; the editor is also taking pitches for the Winter 2026 issue “and beyond.” (Hat tip: The Writer’s Job Newsletter.)
- The Department of Literature within the School of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego “invites applications for Temporary Lecturer(s) in Creative Writing for the 2025/26 academic year. The successful applicant(s) will have expertise in teaching multiple disciplines and genres of creative writing, potentially including Fiction Writing, Poetry Writing, Creative Nonfiction Writing, Experimental Writing, Screenwriting, and Speculative Fiction Writing. Appointments will be part-time (1-2 classes per quarter), from one quarter up to one year in duration.” Upcoming review date: August 11.
- This one’s for Oregon residents: “The theme for the Winter 2026 issue of Oregon Humanities magazine is ‘Consume.’ We’re looking for stories about food and drink, buying and selling, waste and conservation….We welcome all forms of nonfiction writing, including essays, journalism, criticism, and excerpts from forthcoming or recently published books.” Pays: “Between $750 and $1,500, depending on the length and complexity of the piece.” Proposal/draft deadline: August 12.
- The Council of American Jewish Museums (CAJM) “is hiring a communications assistant! Come be a part of the team that supports the people working on the front lines of Jewish cultural institutions! This job will begin in September 2025. Flexible hours and fully remote.” (About 10 hours per week; pays $1,000/month.) Apply by August 18.
- For a professorial position in English/Creative Writing scheduled to begin August 1, 2026, Brigham Young University in Utah seeks applications through August 31.
- “The University of Central Missouri’s Department of English invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing, as well as Managing Editor of Pleiades: Literature in Context magazine, starting in fall 2026.” Specialization in poetry required. Deadline: November 15.
- The American Journalism Project seeks a communications intern. This person “would join the team for three months part-time (approx. 10–15 hours/week). Interns are paid $20 per hour, and all internships are fully remote.” (Hat tip: Freelance Opportunities.) No deadline indicated.
- “The Nosher is seeking a strategic, audience-focused editor to lead one of the most beloved brands in Jewish food media. This role combines editorial execution with audience development and a product mindset—you’ll work closely with our team to translate editorial excellence into measurable audience and revenue results. We’re looking for someone who can look at our thousands of recipes and see endless possibilities—turning a forgotten Rosh Hashanah dish into a trending TikTok, or spotting the perfect partnership opportunity. You’ll be comfortable with outreach and forging new relationships in the food community as part of a broader strategy to position us as the go-to authority on Jewish food.” The Nosher is part of 70 Faces Media, “a remote-first company with roots in New York and office space in Midtown Manhattan.” The advertised salary range for this full-time position is $75,000-$90,000. No deadline indicated.
