• This week, I’ve been reading (and enjoying and admiring) Allegra Goodman’s This Is Not About Us; its publication has revived a long-simmering peeve of mine: publishers and reviewers who insist on calling story collections “novels.” When the stories are novelistically linked, I will accede to the descriptor “novel-in-stories,” as employed in this review of the book. But it makes me (unnaturally?) annoyed when the short story form is not given even a portion of its due.
