Markets and Jobs for Writers

For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit later in the day than in the past). But not too long ago, I began sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.
Reminder: These weekly posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. If you haven’t yet had a chance to peruse the September issue, packed with dozens of opportunities, take some time to do so now.
Another note about these Monday posts: Unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in a single city/state/province, these posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).
But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission or application fees, and they must offer (specified) payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application or participation fees).
And now—the latest gleanings.
- Metphrastics, which publishes poetry “responding to works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art,” is “a fan zine, not officially affiliated with the Met.” They’re currently seeking “poems about Wounds. This can be a literal or abstract wound depicted in a painting, a ‘wounded’ or damaged work of art itself, kintsugi and other artistic repairs of ‘wounds,’ weapons that have caused wounds, having your heart broken in the Egyptian Wing, or any other way you’d like to interpret this prompt.” Payment: $10/poem. Deadline: September 15. (Hat tip: Authors Publish.)
- Cake Zine is planning for its next summer issue, for which it is taking pitches until 9am (EST) September 25. To be titled “Ice Cream Time,” this issue “will explore the relationship between ice cream and time. Ice cream is ephemeral. Your only responsibility is to eat it before it melts. We’re interested in stories that use frozen dessert to think about time: the historical, the futuristic, the seasonal, and the ephemeral. Nostalgia is fair game but don’t give us anything saccharine.” Pay rates: $175-$350. (Hat tip: The Writer’s Job Newsletter.)
- Acre Books “is reading queries and submissions for poetry manuscripts” through September. (Hat tip: @Duotrope.)
- Also open until September 30: applications for fellowships at Columbia University’s Institute for Ideas and Imagination at Reid Hall in Paris. “Each year the Institute brings together a cohort of up to 15 Fellows, half of them Columbia faculty and post-docs, the other half artists and writers from around the world, to spend a year together in work and conversation. The Fellowship stipend is $75,000 for a full academic year at Reid Hall in Paris (September 2027 through May 2028). Fellows have their own office at the Institute, administrative and research support, and access to Columbia’s libraries and various research facilities in Paris and in Europe.” NB: “The creative arts category is for applicants within the creative arts (including visual and sound arts/film/composing/writing) who are not affiliated with Columbia University. (Please remember that in order to be eligible in this category, you cannot – regardless of nationality – be residing permanently in the United States.)”

- In geveb, which aims to be “the focal point for discussions of Yiddish literature, language, and culture, and the home for the next generation of Yiddish scholarship,” is hiring a part-time, remote Communications Associate. Time and compensation: “4 hours/week, October 5 2026–June 30 2027 (34 paid weeks total, 2 weeks’ break around high holidays and 3 week winter break). Paid at $24 hour.
