A Dream Job in Jewish Journalism

If I weren’t already happily employed (and, ahem, somewhat older than the typical “intern”), this paid internship at Tablet would be my dream job:

Tablet Magazine is on the hunt for an intern for our New York City office. If you have experience in journalism and are familiar with the landscape of American Jewish life, we’d love to hear from you. The intern’s focus will be on aiding contributing editor Jeffrey Goldberg with his forthcoming (forth-joining?) blog, but other tasks may be required and other opportunities available as well.

As of now, we are looking for someone to begin in mid-August, and are flexible about time.

If you become the lucky intern, please let me know! I may ask you for a guest post here on My Machberet!

  • Opportunity for a long-form nonfiction writer: “Gothamist is interested in adding long-form non-fiction features to our website. Since we’re new to this game, we’re going to dip our toes in the water slowly, by publishing a single feature next month. How it will work: We will pay one journalist $5,000 to write a long-form non-fiction piece in the 5,000 to 15,000 word range. Subject: Something relevant to our audience of over one million 20-36 year-old readers in New York, timely but with a shelf-life longer than a week. We’re open to any topic, although we would like something that could be well-illustrated with photos or infographics. We’ll cover the editing and production and then publish the piece to the various eBook singles platforms (Kindle, Apple, etc.) with a reasonable price: $1 to $3. Then we’ll handle advertising the piece on our NYC site. If this experiment makes a profit, we’ll share them with the writer once we’ve recouped our initial costs. Will this work?   • Since I’ve long believed that “To Build a Fire” is one of the all-time great short stories in existence, I’m sorry to share news of a fiction contest named for its author only a few days before the July 1 deadline! But better late than never, right? From Up Here magazine (Canada): “Can you spin gruesome, harrowing and heartfelt tales of misadventure and drama in the spirit of legendary Klondike gold-rush era adventure writer Jack London? If yes, we want to hear from you. Here’s your chance to write the next best North of Sixty adventure story. The contest is open to all, and the winning story will be published in the September 2011 issue of Up Here. Along with publication, the first-place author will win $750, second-place wins $250.” (Prizes are presumably conferred in Canadian dollars.) There is no entry fee. (via @femministas)
  • Attention, Britons: English PEN is offering “a fulfilling three month internship from July to September/October 2011, working on a range of challenging issues with a diverse team based in an exciting new centre for literature, literacy and free speech.” Even better: This is a paid internship! Application deadline is July 1. (Are you getting the idea that July 1 is a popular deadline date? I sure am!)
  • “Underwired publishes personal essays (800-1200 words) every month and is always looking for new contributors. Essays should somehow relate to the chosen theme for the month and be on topics of interest to women. Underwired buys one-time rights, and payment is $100.” Upcoming themes include “The Budget Issue” (deadline is–wait for it–July 1) and “The #5 Issue” (the latter celebrates the publication’s fifth anniversary).   • Do you know about The Evertalis? “We accept flash fiction (max. 1000 words) and short poetry such as haiku, senryu, tanka, Englyn etc. We will also accept non-formalist and custom construct short poetry no longer than 15 lines – it is expected that your submission has a gradient of surrealism, or at the very least is not overly conformist to any specific genre.” Pays: $10/poem and $.01/word for flash fiction.   • From the Community-Word Project: “CWP is looking for energetic teaching artists who are committed to bringing the best, high quality arts programming to grades 1-12 in NYC public schools. In addition to dedication to practicing their own art form(s), Teaching Artists (TAs) interested in working with CWP must be 1) committed to working with young people from underserved communities, 2) committed to continually improving their teaching practice and 3) interested in collaboration and experimentation with other artists and art forms, as our residencies are multi-disciplinary and designed and implemented by two teaching artists (i.e., writer and visual artist) working in collaboration with classroom teachers.” Apply by July 5.

    It’s Monday, practicing writers. You know what that means: time for (paying) calls for submission, no-fee contests, jobs, and whatever other treasures I may have found for you:

  • Tin House has a new website, and its revamped submissions guidelines page currently features calls for three theme issues: “The Ecstatic” (for fall 2011; deadline, April 1); “Beauty” (for winter 2011; deadline, April 1); and “Weird Science” (for spring 2012; deadline, November 1). Oh, and submissions can be made online now, too.
  • Great resource to help you place your flash fiction, flash nonfiction, and prose poems: Pamelyn Casto’s (free) FlashFictionFlash newsletter.
  • From the American Kennel Club: “We are now accepting entries for our 25th Annual Fiction Contest. The winners will receive $500 for first place, $250 for second place, and $100 for third place. The winning stories will be published in the AKC GAZETTE and AKC FAMILY DOG as space allows.” Stories “may feature either a purebred or mixed breed dog.” No entry fee. Deadline: January 31, 2011.
  • Applications for summer/fall 2011 paid internships with High Country News (Colo.) are due February 25. “Our interns are a key part of the HCN team; aside from a few minor tasks such as sorting the mail and answering phones, interns spend most of their time researching, interviewing, writing, and developing content — both written and multimedia. We pride ourselves on fairness, accuracy and good writing, and we expect no less of our interns. For all of our internship positions, some prior journalism experience and/or education is preferred. We also prefer applicants who are familiar with High Country News and who have lived in the West and are familiar with its environmental and community issues. We strongly encourage Native American, Hispanic, and applicants from other under-represented backgrounds. For each six-month session, we hire at least one intern who has both photographic and journalism background, and familiarity with audio and visual programs such as Final Cut Pro and Flash. Radio and video experience is a plus for this intern. All interns work with the staff Editors to write news stories for the website and for the newsmagazine, ranging in length from 250 to 900 words. Depending on their experience and ability, editorial interns may also get the opportunity to write a 4,000 word cover story.”
  • “mediabistro is looking for a dynamic, spirited instructor to teach our Fashion Writing class in New York starting in early 2011. This class meets for 8 weeks and will take students through the process of using trend reports, reviews, and looking at both the craft and business of fashion, with students turning in articles and pitches for instructor critique. Ideal candidate will be a full time or freelance fashion writer or editor with extensive experinece and a passion for teaching others. No previous teaching experience required.   • Youngstown State University (Ohio) seeks an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing (Fiction), tenure-track. “Candidate should have experience teaching fiction writing at both the undergraduate and graduate level and some experience in teaching literature courses. Candidate can expect to teach courses as a faculty member for the Northeast Ohio MFA (NEOMFA), and consortial program. Candidate should also demonstrate an ability to teach a diverse student publication with diverse writing interests.”
  • St. John’s University (N.Y.) seeks a Writer, the University of Michigan is looking for a Content Creator (Job #54428 ), and the Philadelphia Education Fund welcomes applications for a Director of Communications.

  • Paying internship opportunities with Tablet Magazine in New York City. Application deadline: December 3, 2010.
  • “Creative Nonfiction is seeking narrative blog posts to reprint in our upcoming Food issue. We’re looking for: interesting, true stories that focus on food, including restaurant reviews; tales of meals gone awry; secrets, tips and kitchen short cuts; confessions from cooks, chefs and/or servers; an examination of the kitchen life; and so on. Narrative, narrative, narrative. Posts that can stand alone, 2000 words max, from 2010. Something from your own blog, from a friend’s blog, from a stranger’s blog.” Pays: “We will contact individual bloggers before publication and pay a flat fee for one-time reprint rights.” Nomination deadline: November 29, 2010.
  • WriterAbroad shares paying markets for personal essays–and samples of her own published work with each.
  • The Terry Pratchett Prize recognizes unpublished novels by authors “resident in the UK, other countries of the British Commonwealth, and the Republic of Ireland.” The competition seeks “stories set on Earth, although it may be an Earth that might have been, or might yet be, one that has gone down a different leg of the famous trousers of time (see the illustration in almost every book about quantum theory). We will be looking for books set at any time, perhaps today, perhaps in the Rome of today but in a world where 2000 years ago the crowd shouted for Jesus Christ to be spared, or where in 1962, John F Kennedy’s game of chicken with the Russians went horribly wrong. It might be one day in the life of an ordinary person. It could be a love story, an old story, a war story, a story set in a world where Leonardo da Vinci turned out to be a lot better at Aeronautics. But it won’t be a story about being in an alternate Earth because the people in an alternate Earth don’t know that they are; after all, you don’t.” No entry fee indicated.   • The Cup of Comfort folks are running a “Favorite Holiday Memory Story Contest,” with $100, free books, and online publication to be awarded to the author of the grand prize-winning story. They’re looking for true stores “that detail a cherished holiday memory.” No entry fee. Deadline: December 5. (via KatCop13)
  • Gettysburg College (Pa.) has released the current guidelines/application instructions for its Emerging Writer Lectureship. No application fee. Deadline: January 28, 2011. Details in this pdf.
  • “The Department of English and the BFA program at Stephen F. Austin State University [Texas] seek applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of creative writing, with genre concentrations in literary non-fiction and poetry; secondary preparations or interests may be cross-discipline: creative writing and technology, environmental literature and writing about the environment, multicultural literature, film topics or travel writing.”

  • Dalkey Archive Press is currently accepting applications for paid internships in its Dublin and London offices. “The expectation is that one or both of these internships will become full-time positions within a year.” Applicants must be EU residents or legally permitted to work in the EU, among other requirements.
  • Words and Images has posted its 2011 submission guidelines: “Words and Images is accepting submissions for the 2011 issue. We are pretty eclectic (erratic?) in our tastes, and will therefore consider pretty much anything. Genre fiction, experimental work, Literature (with a capital L): whatever you have that you’d like to throw our way, just so long as it’s unpublished. We are also looking for two dimensional representation of all forms of visual art. For submissions across all genres we would prefer works that in some way highlights this year’s theme: Resurgam, a latin word that means ‘I will rise again’.” Pays: “We pay contributors in one copy, and $20 per poem and/or printed page of prose.
