Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • The February issue of The Practicing Writer went out to subscribers late last week. Plenty of no-fee contests and paying calls included there.
  • “The Cheryl Strayed/VIDA Memoir Scholarship will provide for one recipient the full registration fee for the Wild Mountain Memoir Retreat, March 15-17th 2013. The scholarship, provided by an anonymous donor, will be awarded to a female writer of demonstrated financial need and literary promise.” Deadline is February 14, 2013. No application fee.
  • Those of you in the NYC area: Gigi Rosenberg will be leading a free session on “Grantwriting for Artists: Perfecting Your Proposal,” on the afternoon of Thursday, February 14.
  • Canada-based Arc Poetry Magazine “is look­ing for sub­mis­sions of poetry—or prose about poetry—that takes the North as its pole star. We are look­ing for writ­ing from the North and/or about the North in its many guises. We don’t take the North as a given and encour­age sub­mis­sions that engage with and chal­lenge ideas and his­tor­ies of the North. We encour­age sub­mis­sions of diverse North­ern voices, poetry styles, and lan­guages (sub­mis­sions in Eng­lish, French, Inuit lan­guages, Dené, and Cree are wel­come; how­ever, sub­mis­sions in lan­guages other than Eng­lish should be accom­pan­ied by author-approved translations).” Check the site for more guidelines and pay rates.
  • Westminster College [Utah] invites applications for an assistant professor in Fiction Writing, the New York Public Library is looking for a Production Assistant to join its Live from the NYPL series, and The University of Baltimore’s School of Communications Design seeks a published fiction or literary non-fiction writer for a half-time contractual position.

  • The Nelson Algren Short Story Award competition is open for submissions until February 1. This competition is open to all legal resident of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia who are over 18 years of age, and there is no entry fee. Stories may run up to 8,000 words. Prizes: “One grand prize winner will receive $3,500. Four finalists will each receive $1,000. Five runners-up will each receive $500.” Note also: “All contest entries may be considered for eventual Tribune publication pending notification of the author.” (Thanks to the PayingWriterJobs list for reminding me of this imminent deadline.)
  • “Established literary publisher Pushkin Press is is looking for an experienced publicist to work part-time to publicize and market its list in the US and Canada. We are seeking a dynamic US-based publicist to promote and market Pushkin Press and our large backlist (over 100 titles) and exciting and growing program of frontlist titles (c 20 new titles/year across adult and children’s lists).” Apply by January 31, 2013.
  • “The New Republic is looking for reporter-researchers for its 2013-2014 program. Job duties include reporting, researching, writing, and fact-checking for the politics section of The New Republic’s print magazine and website; as well as assisting with web production and performing occasional clerical tasks. Reporter-researchers work closely with writers and editors, and are strongly encouraged to write articles. Most reporter-researchers finish their program with a substantial portfolio of clips and have gone on to work almost everywhere in journalism—including The New Republic itself. The year-long job will begin in summer 2013 and will include a salary. Graduating seniors as well as recent graduates and graduates from post-grad programs are welcome to apply.” Deadline: February 8, 2013.
  • Brevity has announced a flash essay contest that it is running in conjunction with the release of its latest issue. The contest builds on Philip Graham’s writing prompt in the recently released The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction (which is republished in the new issue of Brevity). Follow the instructions and submit your flash piece by February 14. There is no entry fee. Prizes: “First prize is a copy of The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Nonfiction: Advice and Essential Exercises from Respected Writers, Editors, and Teachers and $50, second prize and third prizes will be other books from Rose Metal Press.  All three winners will be published on the Brevity blog.”
  • Ramapo College of New Jersey is advertising for a temporary Assistant Professor of Creative Writing and Literature (fiction specialist).

  • The Google Journalism Fellowships program “is aimed at undergraduate, graduate and journalism students interested in using technology to tell stories in new and dynamic ways. The Fellows will get the opportunity to spend the summer contributing to a variety of organizations….There will be a focus on data driven journalism, online free expression and rethinking the business of journalism. The 10-week long Fellowship will open with a week at the Knight Foundation and end with a week at Google, split between Google News and YouTube. Participating organizations are based in Berkeley, CA, Columbia, MO, Cambridge, MA, St. Petersburg/Miami, FL, New York, NY and Washington, DC. They include the Center for Investigative Reporting, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Investigative Reporters & Editors, the Knight Foundation, Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism, Poynter, Nieman Journalism Lab and ProPublica.” NB: “Fellows will receive a stipend of $7,500 USD for 10 weeks during the summer of 2013 (June-August) and a travel budget of $1,000 USD.” Apply by January 31, 2013. No application fee.
  • Published poets (with a minimum of three books) who live in the Greater Montreal area may want to consider applying to be “Poète de la Cité”: “The Poète de la Cité will embody the city’s soul, testifying to its creativity and effervescence, boldness and fears, diversity and harmony, bumps and bruises, joys and jubilations. With a purse of $25,000, this residency will extend over two years, from September 2011 to June 2013. In part, it will take place at the Maison du Conseil des arts de Montréal, in the aptly named Édifice Gaston-Miron, where the poet will have a work space. In addition to writing, the poet will undertake a series of public activities at the Maison du Conseil des arts de Montréal. The Poète de la Cité will also launch an annual poetic event, to be organized in conjunction with the Conseil.” There is no application fee indicated. Deadline: February 15, 2013.   • The Academy of American Poets (New York) is advertising for an Associate Director/Director of Content and for a Programs Assistant.
  • Boston-based job: “Grub Street seeks a part-time (18 hrs/week) Development Associate to work as part of its development team. The Development Associate will act as the administrative assistant for the entire development department, attend meetings, assist with all fundraising activities, and handle myriad communications tasks throughout the year. This is a brand-new position at Grub Street, and may evolve over time. “
  • “The Earlham School of Religion (ESR), a Quaker seminary [Ind.], seeks candidates for a teaching faculty appointment within the Ministry of Writing emphasis to teach introductory and advanced writing courses, advise divinity students with a Ministry of Writing emphasis, facilitate the annual Tom Mullen Ministry of Writing Colloquium, and give input into the development of and subsequent selection of writers for a ‘Writers in Residence’ program.”
  • “The Department of English at the University of Wisconsin Colleges invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor of English at its UW – Waukesha campus to start in the fall of 2013. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience teaching first-year college writing courses, and preferably in creative writing and/or a range of composition courses, developmental to advanced. Possession of a graduate degree in Composition/Rhetoric and/or Creative Writing is preferred.”
  • Harry S Truman College of City Colleges of Chicago is advertising for a Poetry Writing Lecturer, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, invites applications for an “on-going pool” of Part-time Temporary Lecturers in Creative Writing.

  • The month of November is an open reading period (no fees) for Black Lawrence Press, which “seeks to publish intriguing books of literature and creative non-fiction: novels, memoirs, short story collections, poetry, biographies, cultural studies, and translations from the German and French.
  • If you’re a short-story writer and a citizen of a Commonwealth country, it’s time to think about the 2013 Commonwealth Short Story Prize, “awarded for the best piece of unpublished short fiction (2000 – 5000 words). Submissions must be made by the author of the short story. Regional winners receive £1,000 and the overall winner receives £5,000.’ No entry fee. Deadline: December 4, 2012.
  • ICYMI: The November issue of The Practicing Writer is now available. As usual, it features no-fee contests/competitions and submissions calls from magazines and presses that will pay you for your work.
  • The Texas Book Festival (Austin) is looking for a Literary Programs Director, Poetry London (U.K.) seeks a Freelance Poetry Editor, and the Columbus Dispatch (Ohio) is advertising for a Features Reporter.
  • “New College of Florida announces an opening for a Writer in Residence, spring semester 2013 (February-May). The successful candidate will have: at least one published book, and significant publication in other venues as well; two years’ experience teaching creative writing, which can include instruction as a graduate student; and a strong commitment to playing an active role in the community of our residential honors college.   • “The Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard is offering a new research and study opportunity: a short-term visiting fellowship for individuals to work on special projects designed to advance journalism.” No application fee. Application deadline: November 19, 2012.
  • Frequencies, “a new biannual journal of artful essays” that “challenge the current non-fiction prescription” is published by Two Dollar Radio.   • “The Elizabeth Kostova Foundation offers its sixth annual summer fiction writing seminar in the ancient town of Sozopol, Bulgaria. The seminar program consists of intensive daily fiction workshops, roundtable discussions, guest lectures and literary readings by faculty and participants. Fiction writers from Bulgaria and fiction writers from English-speaking countries, including but not limited to the U.K. and the U.S., are invited to apply. A total number of ten applicants will be selected for participation and funding.” No application fee. Application deadline is March 15, 2013, for the May 2013 seminar.

  • “Considering making a career in literary translation? Already embarked on your course but feel you could do with more help and support? If so, you might be one of the talented emerging translators we’re looking for to participate in the 2013 BCLT Translator Mentoring Scheme (1 January – 30 June 2013). Launched in 2010, the scheme has already produced fourteen mentorship ‘graduates’ in languages ranging from Catalan to Polish. Several of the previous mentees have had work published as a result of contacts made and skills honed during the mentoring process. Mentors and mentees work together in a combination of face to face meetings and also through online communication such as email or Skype. Mentees should expect to commit an average of one day a week to the programme. Each mentee receives receives a bursary of £500 plus reasonable expenses.” No application fee.
