Monday Markets/Jobs/Opportunities for Writers

Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Cha: An Asian Literary Journal has announced a contest for unpublished poems about “Betrayal.” Cash prizes for top three and up to five “high commended” poems. All winning poems will be published in the journal’s March issue. No entry fee. Deadline: January 15, 2013.
  • “The editor of The Buenos Aires Reader is “wide-open to submissions from writers writing in English, whether they are expats or natives, as long as they are describing life in Latin America. Yes, that’s right — you don’t have to just write from, in or about Argentina.” Will consider fiction, non-fiction, poetry, opinion, profiles and interviews. Pays: “USD $25 via PayPal, or ARS $100 in person. Payment is made within a month of publication.” No simultaneous submissions. (via Duotrope.com)
  • From Grub Street, Inc., (Boston): “Thanks to the generous support of our donors, each quarter we offer $200 scholarships to at least five writers. Recipients may use their scholarship at any time in the year. To apply for a Winter 2013 scholarship, please email the following to rowan@grubstreet.org by December 5th at 12pm: a 5-10 page sample of your work, and a one-page letter detailing your financial need and desire to take a Grub Street class. Applicants will hear from the selection committee within one week after the deadline.”
  • Paid, part-time internship opportunity with the Jewish Book Council in New York. Apply by December 17.
  • Coming soon: the December issue of The Practicing Writer. Featuring end-of-year book recommendations and, as usual, a slew of no-cost contests and paying submission calls. Don’t miss it!
  • Guidelines are now available for the NYFA Emergency Relief Fund that I mentioned here last week. Plus, PEN American Center has simplified its Writers Fund application for victims of Hurricane Sandy (grants up to $500).
  • “The Coe College [Iowa] English Department invites applications for a tenure-track appointment in Creative Writing and literature with an emphasis on poetry to begin in August 2013.”
  • Syracuse University (N.Y.) is looking for part-time faculty to teach AAS 338: Creative Writing Workshop. “The course AAS 338: Creative Writing Workshop exposes students to techniques of craftsmanship and use of meditation to expand the visionary experience, and aesthetic sensibilities that involve African American Culture. Students gain their experience through a workshop of poetry and prose.”

    Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction). (Please excuse the relative brevity of this week’s post: I’m away for a few days.)

  • Are you a college senior or recent graduate planning to begin a graduate degree program in creative writing in the fall of 2013? You may want to check out the Jack Kent Cooke Graduate Arts Award. “The award provides funding for tuition, room and board, required fees, and books.” The awards can reach “as much as $50,000 annually.” Deadline for Phase One of the application process is November 28, 2012. No application fee indicated.
  • Press 53 is currently open for submissions of poetry and short-story collections. Deadline: November 30.
  • Grub Street (Boston) is looking for a part-time Digital Consultant. “Grub Street is readying to pilot a variety of experimental online creative writing classes in 2013. We’re looking for a part-time consultant to manage and coordinate our efforts in concert with relevant staff members.”
  • “Quadrant is published ten times a year, monthly, except for larger combined issues in January-February and July-August. Each year we publish more than 200 articles, 200 poems, 70 book reviews, 20 short stories and 75 letters to the editor. Quadrant accepts unsolicited, previously unpublished articles that fit within its general profile of a journal of ideas, essays, literature, poetry and historical and political debate. Although it retains its founding bias towards cultural freedom, anti-totalitarianism and classical liberalism, its pages are open to any well-written and thoughtful contribution.” Quadrant is an Australia-based journal and “pays contributors for articles, reviews, poems and short fiction.” (via placesforwriters.com)

  • New scholarship opportunity: “The second annual River Teeth Nonfiction Conference [takes place in Ashland, Ohio, in May] is pleased to announce that it is offering four merit-based scholarships for students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate writing programs. Students interested should complete the registration form and scholarship application by March 1, 2013. The registration fee is waived for scholarship applicants. Scholarships cover the cost of registration for the conference. Recipients are responsible for all other expenses (travel, room and board, etc.). The scholarship does not cover the cost of a full-length manuscript consultation.”
  • Do you have some design skills? Ardor, a new literary magazine, is looking for a logo. “We’re looking for something no larger than 4”x 4” and the winning submission will successfully integrate our publication name into the design. Submit your best work by the end of the day on Friday, November 30, 2012. We’ll announce the winner by the end of December and feature the winning logo in our first three issues of ARDOR, crediting you as the designer with a brief bio. The designer of the winning logo will receive a token payment of $20 upon publication of our first issue.” (via The Review Review)
  • The October issue of The Practicing Writer, filled with information on no-fee writing contests and competitions and paying calls for submission, went out to subscribers this weekend.
  • Attention, Minnesota writers of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. You may be eligible to apply for the Beyond the Pure Fellowships for Writers (formerly the SASE Jerome Grants for Emerging Writers). The program confers “grants of up to $4,000 to four to six emerging Minnesota writers each year….In addition to their grant award, recipients also participate in a 12-month fellowship program that provides community, mentorship, guidance, workshops, and resources throughout the program year….Intermedia Arts’ Beyond the Pure Fellowships for Writers places a particular emphasis on increasing the visibility of and providing a platform for emerging writers whose voices have historically been underrepresented in the literary arts.” Application deadline is 6 p.m. on Friday, October 19. No application fee indicated.
  • “The University of North Carolina Wilmington invites applications for a full-time Editor of Ecotone—Reimagining Place and Lookout Books, an award-winning teaching press, at the rank of lecturer in the Department of Creative Writing on a continuing 12-month appointment, beginning July 1, 2013. This is an excellent opportunity to join a nationally recognized department that offers both a BFA and an MFA, as well as a Certificate in Publishing. Each semester, the successful candidate will teach a course in literary magazine editing associated with the journal Ecotone, as well as another course in the editing/publishing curriculum for either undergraduates or graduate students.”

  • McSweeney’s Internet Tendency has announced that it is once again column contest time, and you’re eligible if you’re writing in English, regardless of location. Even better: “We have prizes. Cash prizes. The top five selections will each receive a $500 lump sum and a one-year contract to write your column (twice a month or thereabouts) for McSweeney’s Internet Tendency. One of those five winners will win a $250 bonus voted on by our readers. We do reserve the right to choose fewer (or more) winners than our planned number of five.” Deadline: “Submissions will be accepted until Monday, August 20th at 10pm Eastern time.” No entry fee.
  • The First Line has announced The First Line First Line Contest: “To celebrate our 15th year, we’re giving you a chance to inspire the world. Send us your best (original and unpublished) starter sentences, and we’ll pick four to use for next year’s first lines. You have until August 31st to submit. The winners will receive $50 and five copies of the issue that was inspired by your first line.” No entry fee.
  • Cha: An Asian Literary Journal is running a contest for unpublished poems about “The Past.” Prizes: “Prizes: First: £50, Second: £30, Third: £20, Highly Commended (up to 3): £10 each. (Payable through Paypal.) All six winning poems will receive first publication in a special section in the September 2012 issue of Cha.” No entry fee. Deadline: September 15, 2012.

  • From Bitch Media: “Currently we hire bloggers on eight-week long contracts, for three (or fewer, depending on the contract) blog posts per week on a topic of their choosing. Topics can be broad and general (sports, dating, television), or more specific (eco-feminism, mental illness in pop culture, web comics). The positions are paid (and fun!). If you’d like to be considered for a position as a guest blogger, send a brief description of your topic choice (including several sample-post ideas) and two writing samples (ideally blog posts).”
  • From Teachers & Writers Collaborative (New York): “T&W is accepting applications until July 2 for writers to teach during the 2012-2013 school year. Our roster of teaching artists includes writers whose work has been published, staged, or filmed; and who have experience teaching in K–12 schools and/or youth-serving community organizations. Preference is given to individuals who have taught in New York City or other large urban school districts. People who can teach in Spanish are especially encouraged to apply. Writers who teach for T&W do so as independent contractors. We will acknowledge your application within one week of receiving it; we plan to conduct interviews beginning in late July.”
  • “The English Department at California University of Pennsylvania seeks a published poet to teach upper- and lower-division creative writing, lower-division literature, and first-year composition. Teaching load is 4/4 and will include Creative Writing Poetry, Introduction to Poetry (literature), and first-year composition classes, as well as other creative writing classes…This is a one-year, temporary faculty appointment. Salary is competitive and commensurate with academic preparation and experience. An excellent fringe benefits package is included.”
  • The Association of Writers & Writing Programs (Va.) is looking for a Conference Coordinator, the University of Houston seeks a Managing Editor for Houston History magazine, and the Saint Louis Art Museum invites applications for a Media Relations Coordinator position.
