Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Big news from Barrelhouse: “It’s been a dream of ours since we started Barrelhouse in 2005, so we’re proud to announce that beginning with issue 12, Barrelhouse will pay contributors $50 each, along with contributor copies….We hope this marks the beginning of a new chapter for Barrelhouse and we hope you’ll join us. When the time is right, send us your best stuff (we’re open right now for fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and a special comedy issue). Come get your fifty big ones!”
  • Wesleyan Writers Conference Scholarships & Fellowships have a deadline of March 22, 2013 (received). There is no application fee; “if you are certain you will attend the Conference, however, do send the $75 deposit and registration form immediately, before completing the rest of your application. The deposit guarantees you a place at the Conference if you should not win an award.”
  • “Lake Forest College [Ill.] seeks a writer of fiction to fill a three-year visiting (non-tenure track) position in the English Department teaching courses in creative writing and developing courses in the design, production, and publication of books and journals.”

  • From the American Society of Journalists & Authors: “”The ASJA Educational Foundation is delighted to offer aspiring nonfiction writers the opportunity to apply for scholarships that will enable them to attend ASJA2013, Fire Up Your Writing Career.” Up to 10 scholarships will be awarded for the New York City conference. Deadline is April 1, 2013. No application fee.
  • Flash fiction contest for students. “Cardinal Sins is currently seeking submissions of flash fiction to be included in our regularly scheduled Winter 2013 print edition. We accept work from both emerging and established writers from any undergraduate or graduate institution and from across the nation….The winner will receive $150 and inclusion in the journal. Honorable mentions will also be included.” Theme: “Trespassing.” Deadline: March 25, 2013. No entry fee. (via @Duotrope)
  • The Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards is a competition open to all adult and high school age Chicago area poets.” Three prizes ($100/$50/$25) in adult category (same for high school category). Deadline: March 8, 2013. No entry fee. (via WinningWriters.com)
  • Extended deadline: “The Scripps College Writing Program seeks two distinguished visiting writers for the Mary Routt Endowed Chair of Writing, one during the spring semester of 2014 and the other during the spring semester of 2015. The successful candidates will serve as Mary Routt Chair of Writing throughout the spring semester (from mid-January to mid-May). Teaching responsibilities include one writing workshop in the area of his or her choice as well as a presentation of his or her work at two public events. We are looking for candidates with critical recognition consistent with a writer of national reputation; we prefer candidates who can show evidence of outstanding teaching ability.”
  • The 2013 Paterson Fiction Prize confers a $1000 award for a novel or collection of short fiction published in 2012. Deadline: April 1, 2013. No entry fee.

  • The deadline is approaching for this year’s Naomi Long Madgett Poety Award. Offered by Lotus Press, this competition “is open to African American poets only.” The contest recognizes a book-length manuscript with publication and a $500 cash award. Manuscripts must be received by March 1.
  • The John Holmes Award, “for a poem by a student enrolled in a New England college,” is administered by the New England Poetry Club. It confers a prize of $100. There is no entry fee for full-time students. Deadline: March 18, 2013.
  • From the Modern Greek Studies Association: “The MGSA is pleased to announce the 2013 Constantinides Memorial Translation Prize Competition for original, new translations into English of a literary work published in Modern Greek. A prize of $500 will be awarded for a piece of Modern Greek literature (poetry, prose, theatre) translated into English.” There is no entry fee indicated. Deadline: April 15, 2013.
  • Ongoing deadlines from Fiction Attic Press for short story collections (pays a $250 advance against royalties) and novels and novellas (by authors who have previously published a novel; also pays a $250 advance against royalties). No reading fees. (via FlashFictionFlash)
  • “Western State Colorado University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing in the department of Communication Arts, Languages, and Literature”; Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville “is seeking a specialist in Creative Writing (poetry) for a tenure-track position“; Iowa State University is advertising for an associate professor, “a nationally distinguished fiction writer to teach undergraduate English courses as well as graduate courses in the MFA Program in Creative Writing and Environment”; and there’s a new visiting assistant/associate professor position available with Truman State University Department of English and Linguistics, which “invites applications for the inaugural Clayton B. Ofstad Writer-in-Residence position.”

  • For our friends who are resident in the United Kingdom: “The Jane Martin Poetry Prize…is delighted to invite entries for the 2013 competition. The competition will be judged by experts drawn from across the literary world and academia. We are thrilled that this year the panel will include Gillian Beer and Caroline Bergvall. Building on the success of 2012, the 2013 winner will receive not just a cash prize of £1000, but the opportunity to give a reading at a high-profile poetry event at which the prize will be awarded.” No entry fee. Deadline: March 15, 2013.
  • Based in Canada, “Sterling is a literary journal for everyone’s stories. We accept fiction, poetry and graphic content from writers at all levels. Each issue of Sterling has its own look and feel because we love printed material. It’s also a way to celebrate our ongoing triumphs over the blank page.” Pays: “Contributors can choose between $25 or two copies of the journal.” Submission deadline: March 24, 2013.   • “Oxford University Press and the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard University are pleased to announce a call for contributors to the Dictionary of Caribbean and Afro-Latin American Biography (DCALAB).” Pays: “Entries range from 500-2500 words and come with an honorarium of 10 cents per word (in OUP product) or 5 cents per word by check.”
  • From Austin Peay State University (Tenn.): “Applications are invited for the position of Assistant Professor-English with a specialization in Creative Writing-poetry. This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position to begin August, 2013.”
  • The Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University (Mass.) is advertising for a staff writer.
  • The Poetry Foundation (Chicago) is looking for an Editor for Poetry magazine.

  • The February issue of The Practicing Writer went out to subscribers late last week. Plenty of no-fee contests and paying calls included there.
  • “The Cheryl Strayed/VIDA Memoir Scholarship will provide for one recipient the full registration fee for the Wild Mountain Memoir Retreat, March 15-17th 2013. The scholarship, provided by an anonymous donor, will be awarded to a female writer of demonstrated financial need and literary promise.” Deadline is February 14, 2013. No application fee.
  • Those of you in the NYC area: Gigi Rosenberg will be leading a free session on “Grantwriting for Artists: Perfecting Your Proposal,” on the afternoon of Thursday, February 14.
  • Canada-based Arc Poetry Magazine “is look­ing for sub­mis­sions of poetryor prose about poetrythat takes the North as its pole star. We are look­ing for writ­ing from the North and/or about the North in its many guises. We don’t take the North as a given and encour­age sub­mis­sions that engage with and chal­lenge ideas and his­tor­ies of the North. We encour­age sub­mis­sions of diverse North­ern voices, poetry styles, and lan­guages (sub­mis­sions in Eng­lish, French, Inuit lan­guages, Dené, and Cree are wel­come; how­ever, sub­mis­sions in lan­guages other than Eng­lish should be accom­pan­ied by author-approved translations).” Check the site for more guidelines and pay rates.
  • Westminster College [Utah] invites applications for an assistant professor in Fiction Writing, the New York Public Library is looking for a Production Assistant to join its Live from the NYPL series, and The University of Baltimore’s School of Communications Design seeks a published fiction or literary non-fiction writer for a half-time contractual position.
