Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

From the Archive: Gift-Giving Possibilities for Benevolent Bibliophiles

Sarah Begley‘s share of a Goodreads post that spotlights literary-themed nonprofits to support during the holidays reminded me of a similar piece I wrote a number of years ago—11 years, to be precise—for The Writer magazine.

Interestingly (and happily), there’s some nice overlap between my list and the one on Goodreads.

I realize that this image isn’t the easiest one to read, so let me give hyperlinked shoutouts to all of the organizations I listed back in 2006: Asian American Writers’ Workshop, First Book, Hurston/Wright Foundation, National Yiddish Book Center (now simply “Yiddish Book Center”), ProLiteracy Worldwide (now apparently “ProLiteracy”), Reach Out and Read, Reading ASSIST Institute, and Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic (now named “Learning Ally”).

And I’ll add one more, which I have come to know more recently: the Pajama Program (which deals in both pajamas AND books for bedtime).

New Giveaway Alert

Quick note to let you know that there’s a new giveaway running that will award a copy of The Going, the new book by my PR client Leon Wiener Dow. Part-spiritual memoir, part-learned reflection on Jewish law (halakha), The Going casts philosophical and theological considerations against a backdrop of personal experience. Written with a sharp mind and a generous heart, this book illustrates how one seeker is crafting a life of morals and meaning—and guides us through the challenges that can ensue in that endeavor. Giveaway details here.

And Speaking of PR Clients

I am delighted to announce that I have joined the team that will be spreading the word about Lisa Romeo’s lovely forthcoming debut book Starting with Goodbye: A Daughter’s Memoir of Love after Loss (University of Nevada Press, May 2018).

I’ve been a fan of Lisa’s work for a long time. (She and I connected years ago through “the writing community”; I was touched, when reading the galley of Starting with Goodbye, to see my name in the acknowledgments.) So it’s a special pleasure and privilege for me to be working on this project.

There will be much more to share about this book in the months ahead, but for the moment, please take note of both Lisa’s spiffy new website and the chance to win one of multiple copies that her publisher is offering as giveaways via Goodreads.
