For many years—since long before Substack arrived on the scene—I’ve been curating weekly “Monday Markets and Jobs” posts on the Practicing Writing blog, where everyone can still find them (albeit slightly later in the day than in the past). But some months ago, I began sharing this information early every Monday morning via Substack, too, as a benefit for paid subscribers.

Please note: These posts are supplements to the free monthly newsletter, allowing me to amplify opportunities that I may not have caught in time for each month’s edition. Another note: Unlike the monthly newsletter, which filters out listings that may be limited to writers in single city/state/province, these weekly posts do carry such localized opportunities (jobs included).

But in all cases, calls and competitions must not charge submission/application fees, and they must offer payment for winning/published work (or, in the case of residencies, they must not charge application or participation fees).

This week’s gleanings below.

• Quick reminder as we pass this month’s mid-point: Many of the opportunities featured in the November edition of The Practicing Writer 2.0 remain open, so be sure that you haven’t missed any of them!
• Recently re-opened for submissions (and remaining open for the next several months): Moss, which considers fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. “Submissions are limited to current and former residents of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and British Columbia, or those with a substantial connection to the region. Moss pays $150 for accepted fiction and nonfiction, and $50 for poetry.” (Hat tip: @Duotrope.)
• For the remainder of November (that is, until November 30), Haven Speculative is open for fiction and poetry submissions. Pays: “8¢ per word for original fiction” and $20 per poem. (Hat tip: Authors Publish)
• The Creative West Artist Fund “celebrates and supports the creative, emotional, and financial well-being of artists and cultural practitioners across the 16 states and jurisdictions in the Creative West region [Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, American Samoa, Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), and Guam]. Rooted in Creative West’s values of Democracy, Wellness, and Belonging, this [grant] program provides no-strings-attached funding and a four-month coaching and community care series to help artists strengthen their practice, deepen networks, and nurture abundance. Building upon the earlier BIPOC Artist Fund, this new iteration centers artists as essential workers in the creative and civic economy. It reflects our commitment to responsive, equitable, and trust-based grantmaking—where accessibility, care, and creative autonomy define success.” Grant amount: $5,000. Deadline: November 30. • For poets resident in the UK (and between 18-30 years old): “The Jane Martin Poetry Prize is a national poetry competition, established in 2010, in memory of Girton alumna, Jane Elizabeth Martin (1978, Classics) through the generous support of her family….The winner will receive a cash prize of £1000 and there will also be a second prize of £500. Both prize-winners will have an opportunity to give a reading at a celebratory event at Girton College, at which the prizes will be awarded.” Deadline: December 1.
• The team behind the Campfire Stories series is seeking “nature and place-based stories for our new Oregon Coast collection.” Both previously published and new stories will be welcome welcome (and will receive payments of $150 and $300, respectively). “Stories should capture the essence of the region, highlighting the distinctive natural features, flora, fauna, community, history, and experiences of the Oregon Coast. We seek nature-focused stories, through diverse forms of writing (e.g. essays, prose, poetry, ballads, short stories) that convey an authentic sense of place. Stories should not exceed 2,000 words.” NB: “All submitting writers must have a lived, first-hand experience in the Oregon Coast region.” Deadline: December 12. • The Georgia Review is advertising for a Fiction Editor, who, “in concert with the Poetry Editor and Nonfiction Editor, is responsible to the Editor of The Georgia Review for performing high-quality editorial work dealing primarily with screening of submissions from the online submissions manager program, selecting and preparing works for potential publication, and attending acquisitions meetings in which such manuscripts are evaluated. Some manuscripts approved by the acquisitions team will be assigned to genre editors by the Editor for final editing. Although the Fiction Editor specializes in fiction, each genre editor is fluent in all genres. This position leads the department’s experiential learning program, which entails administering the program as the faculty of record, conducting the interviews that determine each year’s cohort of interns, leading submission workshops, and mentoring the graduate assistants, who assist with running the program.” NB: “This is an open rank role within the academic professional faculty track.” Salary: “Minimum $60,000.” No deadline indicated.
• Epiphany seeks a talented part-time freelance Digital Marketing Manager and Media Strategist to join our editorial team….This role involves overseeing our website, social media platforms, and the copy, design, and distribution of our newsletter as well as developing and implementing fresh marketing campaigns to broaden our reach….The Digital Marketing Manager and Media Strategist ensures that all social media, marketing materials, and the website align with Epiphany’s mission: to give voice to the talented and innovative writers of the 21st century and to support both emerging and established writers exploring new terrain, whether experimental or traditional.” Compensation: “The salary for this part-time freelance position is $12,000 annually, and the estimated flexible schedule is 8-10 hours per week.” No deadline indicated.
• The Boston Book Festival seeks an Executive Director. This is a full-time position that “with flexible hybrid schedule” that “requires significant in-office presence in Boston/Brighton and availability for some evenings/weekends, especially in the fall festival season.” Salary range: “$120,000-$150,000, commensurate with experience.” No deadline indicated.
• Arts Midwest is hiring “a dynamic Social Media and Marketing Manager to shape how our storytelling, short-form videos, opportunities, and resources show up across our Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Facebook, LinkedIn, Reddit, email, and whatever comes next.” This is a full-time (4-day, 30-hour workweek) position with a listed salary of $59,000. It is a remote position; applicants “must reside in Arts Midwest’s nine-state region of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, or a Native Nation that shares this geography. Travel will be expected 2-4 times per year for this position for all-staff gatherings and site visits.” Deadline: December 1.
• Day Eight, “an arts producer and publisher dedicated to the healing of the world through the arts,” seeks an Education Program Associate. Compensation for this hybrid position (Washington, DC): “USD $21 – $25 / hour (12-20 hours/week).” Apply by December 1.
• “The Department of English at The Pennsylvania State University at University Park, Pennsylvania, invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor in Creative Writing (Poetry) to begin August 2026.” Deadline listed: December 14.
