“The Missouri Warrior Writers Project, in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council, is pleased to announce a contest and call for submissions for its national anthology of writing by veterans and active military service personnel of Afghanistan and Iraq about their wartime experience. This experience includes deployments and those who have never been deployed. Transition back into civilian life is also a topic of interest for this anthology. The contest will award 250.00 each to the top entries in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. All entries will be considered for publication in the anthology. There is no entry fee.” Deadline: December 31, 2011.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Continuing Studies seeks a Writing Program Coordinator/Outreach Instructor. “Work in a team environment teaching and creating online and in-person workshops in mostly noncredit. Prefer a candidate who has published and taught fiction (genre and/or mainstream/literary) with poetry and creative nonfiction a plus. Should have experience coaching/critiquing writers, teaching online and in-person, program planning, budgeting, marketing. Wordrunner Electronic Chapbooks plans an anthology e-chapbook (fiction only) on the subject of “loss”: “We want to read about any kind of loss and its impact, be it serious or humorous or both.” Writers may submit up to three stories; at least one of the submitted stories must be previously unpublished. This mini-collection will feature work by up to six authors. Submission deadline is August 21, 2011. Pays: “Per story: $10 to $20, depending on final selections.”
This one’s for you, practicing-writers-who-are-also-high-school-teachers: “The Norman Mailer Center and the National Council of Teachers of English are pleased to invite submissions for the 2011 Norman Mailer Writing Award for High School Teachers. Full- and part-time high school teachers are eligible to enter the competition….From five finalists, one winner will be selected to receive a $10,000 cash prize along with travel and lodging to attend the Norman Mailer Center’s Annual Gala on November 8, 2011, in New York City, where the Mailer Prize and the Norman Mailer High School and College Writing Awards are also presented. The winner will also receive a fellowship to the prestigious Norman Mailer Writers Colony during the summer of 2012.” Application deadline is July 27, 2011 (noon, CST), and the work entered–which must be fiction–may be previously published (if publication took place within the last 12 months). The competition is open to teachers who live outside the U.S. but work in American-accredited schools. No entry fee indicated.
“The Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) and the editorial team of film.culture360.org are inviting potential writers (comprising of film journalists, filmmakers, film academics, festival programmers, film professionals and film enthusiasts) from ASEM countries to submit proposals for articles. The selected articles will be published on culture360.org website dedicated to connecting Asia and Europe through film.” Proposals are due before July 31, 2011. Or change the names back in your clearly autobiographical stories and send us those. Of course, we are still reading fiction (plus poetry) so feel free to continue to fabulate and versify.” (Same NB note from above applies here.)
“Uncle John’s Flush Fiction wants your short story! We’re looking for entertaining short fiction, suitable for bathroom (or anyroom) reading, maximum 1,000 words. Another anthology opportunity: Trust & Treachery: Tales of Power, Intrigue, and Violence seeks ” stories that are 1000-5000 words in length. We will pay $20 per story, to be paid on January 1, 2012 or on acceptance, whichever comes later. Although the emphasis is on short stories, we will also accept select pieces of poetry for this anthology with payment at $5 per poem.” Deadline: December 15, 2011. “The American Literary Translators Association is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2011 ALTA Travel Fellowship Awards. Each year, four to six fellowships in the amount of $1,000 are awarded to beginning (unpublished or minimally published) translators to help them pay for travel expenses to the annual ALTA conference. This year’s conference will be held November 16–19 in Kansas City, Missouri.” No application fee. “Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, invites applications from fiction writers for a multi-year lecturer position in Creative Writing, beginning August, 2011. The successful candidate will teach writing courses in fiction (and possibly in literary nonfiction or poetry), as well as other courses in English and literature.”

News from the British Library: “Applications are invited for the Eccles British Library Writer in Residence Award. The award of £20,000, sponsored by the David and Mary Eccles Centre for American Studies at the British Library, is open to writers resident in the United Kingdom. Writers should be working on a non-fiction or fiction full-length book, written in the English language, the research for which requires that they make substantial use of the British Library’s collections relating to North America (the USA and/or Canada). The award holder will be the Eccles British Library Writer in Residence for a period of one year from 1st January 2012. The award will help the Writer in Residence to spend part of that time on site at the British Library, making direct use of the collections relating to North America (the USA and/or Canada).” No application fee. “The Penn State Altoona English Program is taking applications for a one-semester teaching residency in fiction and creative non-fiction writing. The residence, designed to offer an emerging writer substantial time to write, offers a salary of $10,000 in return for teaching one general education level introduction to creative writing workshop during the Fall 2011 semester (August 22-December 15). The resident writer will also give two readings and work informally with our English majors. Benefits are not included.” Application review begins May 16.
