Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Three quick updates from my writing practice.

1. I was saddened to learn this week of the demise of a newspaper that was part of my life for a long time—since my childhood move to New Jersey decades ago. Over time, the New Jersey Jewish News published my Bat Mitzvah announcement, some of my earliest freelance book reviews, and, most recently, a beautiful profile on the occasion of Birthright‘s release and a launch event in my home congregation. I’m going to miss it.

Two early clips, from what was then called “MetroWest Jewish News.”

2. Please save the date (Sunday, August 30). I’ve been invited to be the featured reader at Jerusalism’s next virtual open-mic event. Whether you’d like to read from your own work or just “lurk” in the background, please join us! (FYI: 8pm Jerusalem time = 1pm, New York time.)

3. I’ve heard back about that pitch I mentioned two weeks ago. The bad news: The answer was “no.” The good news: The editor, with whom I’ve worked before, gave me some helpful clues about new directions in the publication’s needs (in this case, regarding book-related content). I’ll be pitching this editor again. Meantime, I sent out another pitch (elsewhere), and I’m cooking up more.

What’s new in your writing practice?

  1. Erika,
Thanks for letting us know about the cessation of the Jewish News (Metrowest). My family received this paper every week and it helped me a lot with family genealogy. I’ve been using digitized issues online for academic research.

Thanks, Barb. Btw, I tried leaving a comment on *your* post this a.m., but there seemed to be some glitch. Anyway, enjoy *your* online reading. (I’m reminded of a story by my friend Michael Burstein, “Kaddish for the Last Survivor.” Do you know it? https://www.apexbookcompany.com/blogs/frontpage/15412301-free-fiction-kaddish-for-the-last-survivor-by-michael-a-burstein)

  2. Thanks for trying to leave me a reply on The Whole Megillah. I’m not familiar with Michael Burstein’s story–I’ll check it out!

  3. Looking forward to August 30. 🙂

      We’ll have fun!

  4. Hi Erika, and All,

I write action and adventure stories, mostly for the New Pulp market. Shelby Vick’s PlanetaryStories.com’s on-line pulp magazines ran over twenty of my tales. In his 90’s, Shelby passed on. Now the site is gone, too.

I just put my own site on-line: https://erwin-k-roberts.com

I’ve done a couple of Blog posts, and have four prose stories up. This includes a self-contained excerpt from my 2014 short novel “Dr. Watson’s American Adventure.” Another story will be posted in August.

Hope you take a look. Just do not expect anything even vaguely resembling “Literature.”

    Best,
    Erwin

Sounds like quite an accomplishment, getting all of that online on your own. Good for you!
