Midweek Notes from a Practicing Writer

Three quick updates from my desk.

1. How many of you are members of the Authors Guild? For some reason, I had never applied to join. But this summer (thanks, in large part, to the dinner-with-a-writer-friend that I mentioned last week), I realized that the membership dues would cost me a fraction of the attorney’s fee that I had to cough up recently for a contract review for a work-for-hire project I was up for. (In fact, I’d been told the project was mine—until the company killed it just as I was prepared to sign; don’t ask.)

2. Speaking of writer-friends: Sometime this spring, my accountability partner and I somehow drifted out of our longtime practice of exchanging weekly reports/goal lists. This week, we chatted on the phone and determined that we’d return to our old habit (and, as of yesterday, we have).

3. Believe it or not, July is almost over. Which means that I’m finishing up the August newsletter; it will go out to subscribers on Sunday.

  1. I’ve been a member of the Authors Guild since maybe the late 1990s and did make use of the contract review and the website builder.
