Thursday’s (Penultimate) Pre-Publication Post

It has been an exciting and eventful week for Quiet Americans (and, therefore, for me).

First, Quiet Americans received an incredibly detailed and perceptive review over on Gently Read Literature. I’m so grateful to reviewer Anne Whitehouse for her careful and generous reading. I can’t resist giving you a sample, so here’s the first paragraph:

The characters in Erika Dreifus’ profound first collection of stories, Quiet Americans, are first and foremost survivors, or else descended from, or married to survivors. They count themselves among the lucky few that got out alive, escaped from the vast conflagration of a people–European Jewry–and their distinguished culture—a broad, liberal, freedom-loving culture that had flourished despite a history of persecution and humiliation, but did not survive the Holocaust. They share a sense of life’s precariousness, of the accidents of destiny. They fear that in an instant they might lose all that constitutes their position and well being. They find themselves caught between a sense of hard reality and a hope for the future. They are “quiet Americans” because they don’t tend to speak out or try to call attention to themselves. They don’t want to make a fuss and are generally grateful to be left alone—“better not to give crazy people any reason to get any crazier.”

Next, I was thrilled to see Quiet Americans emerge as an enthusiastic subject of conversation on this month’s EarlyWord Galley Chat on Twitter. (Also gleaned that a review will be published in the March issue of Shelf Unbound.) Thanks to everyone who participated in the chat for the surprise highlight of my Tuesday!

Finally (drumroll, please!): Quiet Americans is now available on Amazon.com. Yes, I know the official release date is January 19. But if you know me at all, and you know that I’m working with a micropress where the authors are heavily involved with the publication process, you’re not surprised that the book is available a little bit ahead of time.

  • I’m not one for making too many New Year’s resolutions myself, but I sure do enjoy reading other people’s lists of intentions. And I really liked reading poet Diane Lockward’s recent review of how she fared with the resolutions she made for 2010.
  • Good news for those of us who love good fiction: Andrew’s Book Club is back.
  • I thought Daniel Handler’s essay on reading poetry, in the January 2011 issue of Poetry magazine, was terrific when I read it in print, and I’m so glad that it’s now online.
  • I know: You don’t expect to hear about my book, Quiet Americans, before Thursday, but I can’t help pointing you to these reflections, which were inspired by mention of another author’s new book on the Tablet magazine site a few days ago.

  • In Josh Lambert’s Tablet Books Column, A Familiar Name

    If you follow this blog, it’s likely not news to you that one of my most trusted resources for information on new Jewish books is Josh Lambert’s column on Tablet. But I found something especially newsworthy in this week’s column: a mention of William C. Donahue‘s Holocaust as Fiction: Bernhard Schlink’s Nazi Novels and Their Films (Palgrave).

    To explain why this discovery resonated so strongly, I must backtrack.

    Almost eighteen years ago, when I was entering a Ph.D. program in Modern French history, I found myself in an intensive summer school class, trying to acquire sufficient skills to pass the German portion of my department’s language requirements. Yes, I was focusing on France, but the department required me, as a Europeanist, to demonstrate sufficient reading knowledge of both French and German.

    Never mind that my paternal grandparents had been born and raised in Germany. Never mind that my father grew up speaking German at home–his grandmother, who joined the family in New York in 1946, never really learned to speak English. Never mind that, at times throughout my childhood, my father and his parents would switch to German when they wanted to communicate something they did not want my sister or me to understand. I hadn’t learned German. I hadn’t wanted to learn it. But that summer of 1993, I didn’t have a choice any longer. And William C. Donahue (Bill), then pursuing his own doctoral studies, was my instructor.

    Bill was an excellent teacher (as was the other then-graduate student, Joe Metz, who worked with our group in additional drill sessions). And although, as his new book’s title suggests, his primary scholarly interests rested in German literature, Bill was very conscious of and sensitive to pedagogical issues—including the issue of how Nazism and the Holocaust were taught and represented in elementary German-language instruction.

    Ultimately, Bill wrote (and won an award for) an article titled “‘We shall not speak of it’: Nazism and the Holocaust in the Elementary German Course.” I am proud that one of the appendices to this article comprises questions that I conveyed that summer from my classmates to my grandparents during a weekend visit, and my grandparents’ responses.     One word that I learned that summer working with Bill and Joe appears more than once in what is the effective title story of my forthcoming collection, Quiet Americans. It’s a word that resonated strongly when I learned it, and, evidently, it stayed with me long past the time when most of the others that I’d learned that summer had, frankly, disappeared from my memory.

    It’s Vergangenheitsbewältigung.

    As the story’s narrator explains, “It’s a word that means, roughly, ‘coming to terms with the past.'”

    Bill Donahue has helped me–and, I am sure, many others–with that process of coming to terms with the past. I look forward to reading his new book.

    Oh, and by the way: Bill (and Joe) also helped me pass my department’s German exam that long-ago fall.

  • Fans of the “Modern Love” column in The New York Times may be interested in the recently-posted guidelines on “how to submit Modern Love essays.”
  • The Texas Institute of Letters administers an array of literary awards open to entrants who were born in Texas or “lived in Texas for at least two consecutive years at some time.” A literary work “whose subject matter substantially concerns Texas is also eligible.” The next submission deadline is imminent (January 9), and there are no entry fees.
  • “Babble.com is looking for a parenting news blogger to join the fastest growing website for parents, with 4 million uniques and counting. The job involves contributing a minimum of two posts per day to Strollerderby, Babble’s breaking news blog written by the web’s most tuned-in, best-informed, wittiest parents.” Check the announcement on MediaBistro.com (site registration required).
  • I am seeing some interesting freelance opportunities posted on Twitter by @femministas, which I discovered (I think) thanks to @JennCrowell.
  • For poets, fictionists, and writers of creative nonfiction: Lots of free-to-enter competitions and paying calls for submissions were packed into our January Practicing Writer newsletter, which went out to subscribers last Thursday. Read the issue online here.
  • Roger Williams University (R.I.) seeks a Director of Marketing, Johns Hopkins University (Md.) is looking for a Director of Communications & Marketing, and the University of California-Berkeley invites applications for a Writer/Editor.
