- From St. Lawrence University (N.Y.): “Fiction or creative non-fiction writers with significant publications and teaching experience are invited to apply for the position of Viebranz Visiting Professor of Creative Writing for the academic year 2012-2013. Publications and teaching experience in a second genre would be preferable. The individual hired will teach two genre-specific courses each semester, at the beginning and advanced level, and be an active participant in the English Department. Departmental activities will include giving a reading as part of the St. Lawrence University Writers Series; serving as a reader on a senior honors thesis, and possibly directing a senior independent project; and leading occasional workshops for senior writing majors, or giving a craft talk on writing. Evidence will be sought of a proven record of innovative pedagogy in creative writing and an enthusiasm for teaching.”

Annual literary and art journal Ellipsis is now open for submissions (closes November 1). “We pay our contributors $10 for each poetry or art piece and $50 for each prose piece, plus two free copies of the issue.”
From The George Washington University (D.C.): “For appointment beginning in the fall of 2012, we seek a poet to teach two semesters at The George Washington University as the Jenny McKean Moore Writer-in-Washington. The successful candidate will teach a small poetry workshop each semester for members of the metropolitan Washington community. No tuition is charged for these workshops, which are not open to University students. The successful candidate will also teach two classes, one each semester, for students at The George Washington University….The position is intended to serve as a fellowship for the visiting writer, since it involves only a moderate teaching load, and the program’s location at a university in the center of Washington should offer additional attractions for the writer.”
Maryland poets and fiction writers, it’s your time to shine! “Poets & Writers has selected Maryland for the 2012 Maureen Egen Writers Exchange Award. Each year since 1984, Poets & Writers has invited writers from a selected state to apply for the award.” Application deadline is December 1, 2011. There’s no entry fee, and each prize package includes $500, a networking trip to New York, and a one-month residency at Jentel.
“The MFA in Writing program at the University of San Francisco invites applications for a tenure-track position in poetry at the Assistant Professor level to begin fall 2012. Job responsibilities include teaching graduate workshops and craft-based literature seminars and possibly an occasional undergraduate cw course. Administrative responsibilities include serving as coordinator for poetry curriculum and performing duties related to admissions and thesis approval. Expertise in a secondary genre (fiction or creative nonfiction) is desirable, but not required. The teaching requirement is two courses per semester….The candidate must have a strong publication record, with at least two books of poetry in print or under contract.”
“Dalkey Archive Press in the School of Literatures, Cultures and Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, invites applications for a full-time Senior Editor, with target start date of September 16, 2011. The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The position is reviewable each year and is contingent on funding and periodic strong performance reviews. “ArtFunkl is pleased to offer artists a special residency opportunity for a 1-month stay [October 2011] in the beautiful western Mediterranean city of Valencia, Spain.” There is a residency charge (£730 for the month), but there is no application fee. “Accommodation is in a comfortable apartment on the edge of the city centre. The apartment has a double bedroom, and a single bedroom/study room which can be set up as a studio space. “We are pleased to invite you to submit nominees for The New York Public Library’s Twelfth Annual Young Lions Fiction Award, to be given in the spring of 2012. This award was created expressly to promote the work of young writers, to celebrate their accomplishments publicly, and to make a difference in the lives of these artists as they continue to build their careers. The award, which carries a $10,000 prize, is given annually to an American writer age 35 or younger for either a novel or collection of short stories.” No entry fee. From Library Journal’s Barbara Hoffert email to publicists: “In the October 1, 2011, issue, Library Journal will list the first novels premiering during the fall-winter season. Books published between September 1, 2011, and January 31, 2012, are eligible. To be featured in the issue, please send me a list of your fiction debuts and include the following information: author, title, publication date, and state or country of residence. In addition, we have begun presenting first novels by genre (e.g., mystery, thriller, pop fiction, literary fiction); please specify genre. Please remember that this list covers only novels, not short fiction, and that a foreign author’s novel must be his or her first publication, not simply the first publication here. “Inspired by the July publication of Microstyle: The Art of Writing Little, Gotham is pleased to present a Microstyle Writing Contest.” The book’s author, Chris Johnson, will serve as finalist judge. Prize package includes a 10-week Gotham Writing Workshop, a $50 Barnes & Noble Gift Card, a one-year subscription to The Writer (the September issue of which includes my review of Microstyle), and a copy of the book. Deadline: September 15, 2011. No entry fee.
“The theme of the next issue of Vestal Review is a twist on classic fairy tales. Please submit a flash fiction story (500 words or less) about the yet unheard adventures of Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White or any other well-known fairy tale character. Interpret the theme broadly and imaginatively, but incline toward a literary story. Please state the source tale’s name before the title. No more than two submissions per author, as usual. Submit between August 1 and November 30, 2011.” Pays (rates vary depending on story length; “stories of great merit receive up to $25 flat fee; 3 cents a word is a minimum pay in any case”). “Cintas Fellowships acknowledge creative accomplishments and encourage excellence in architecture, literature, music composition and the visual arts. Eligibility is limited to artists of Cuban citizenship or direct descent (having a Cuban parent or grandparent)….Fellowships are awarded annually in the amount of $10,000 each and are paid in quarterly stipends, beginning in September, for twelve consecutive months.” Applications from creative writers are welcome in 2011. “The International Day of the Disappeared (30 August) commemorates people who have gone missing throughout the world in situations of violence and armed conflict. It is a reminder of the hundreds of thousands of families who are unaware of the fate of their loved ones, and organisations like the Red Cross who work to restore family contact between separated family members.Give your voice to the thousands of missing people throughout the world by entering our creative writing competition….Your writing should be based on the theme of ‘the disappeared’. It should fit onto one side of A4 paper. So this could be poetry, prose, a comic strip, a short story, an excerpt from your diary, a song… anything at all that you can write on the chosen theme.” Prizes: “The winning entry will receive a £50 cash prize and a £50 national book voucher. - “Crab Orchard Review is seeking work for our Summer/Fall 2012 issue focusing on writing exploring the people, places, history, and changes shaping the states (and *District of Columbia) in the U.S. that make up the northern mid-Atlantic and Northeast (*Maryland, *Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine) and the northern Midwest east of the Mississippi River (Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, and *Minnesota). *We know we’re stretching boundaries and regions with the District of Columbia, Maryland, Delaware, and Minnesota, but we would like to see what those places bring to this exploration.
