Wednesday’s Work-in-Progress: While I Was Away

So, this past week I spent a few days in glorious, warm Turks & Caicos.

Anyone who travels with young children–especially young children who don’t exactly embrace hotel “kiddie programs” or day camps–knows that these trips aren’t always 100 percent vacations. But we all had a wonderful time. AND I managed to squeeze in a fair amount of reading. Including:

  • The Paris Review‘s spring 2014 issue. I especially enjoyed the interviews with Adam Phillips and Matthew Weiner.
  • Creative Nonfiction‘s spring 2014 issue, with a standout piece by Wendy Rawlings.
  • The forthcoming translation (by Jeffrey M. Green) of Aharon Appelfeld’s Suddenly, Love (Schocken Books). (Actually, this was my second reading of the galley, in preparation for a review that I’m working on this week.)
  • A digital ARC of Nora Gold’s novel Fields of Exile (Dundurn), coming in May. You’ll be hearing more about this novel–which is being described as the first novel “about” anti-Israelism in contemporary academe–in the not-so-distant future, too. (For starters, I’m planning to run a Q&A with Nora at some point on My Machberet.)
  • I hope that you’ve all had a good week, too!

    “The driving question for the [Mad Men] series is, Who are we? When we talk about ‘we,’ who is that? In the pilot, Pete Campbell has this line, ‘Adding money and education doesn’t take the rude edge out of people.’ Sophisticated anti-Semitism. I overheard that line when I was a schoolteacher. The person, of course, didn’t know they were in the presence of a Jew. I was a ghost. Certain male artists like to show that they’re feminists as a way to get girls. That’s always seemed pimpy to me. I sympathize with feminism the same way I identify with gay people and with people of color, because I know what it’s like to look over the side of the fence and then to climb over the fence and to feel like you don’t belong, or be reminded at the worst moment that you don’t belong.”

  • Monday Markets for Writers

    Monday brings the weekly batch of no-fee competitions/contests, paying submission calls, and jobs for those of us who write (especially those of us who write fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction).

  • Attention, Minnesotans! “The Minnesota Emerging Writers’ Grant provides writers with financial support and professional assistance to develop and implement multifaceted plans for their artistic endeavors. Winners will be selected to receive grants of up to $10,000 to underwrite projects of their own design. The total amount that can be awarded is $38,000. The total number of winners will be dependent on the requests. Typically, four writers are awarded grants.” No application fee indicated. Deadline: March 28, 2014.
  • New opportunity! A Public Space (APS) Emerging Writer Fellowships will provide three U.S.-based writers with mentorships, publication in A Public Space, stipends of $1,000, and free workspace in the APS Brooklyn offices. “Please note that applicants from all across the United Stats are encouraged to apply for these fellowships, and that the residency in our offices is an optional element.” They’re looking for writers “who have not yet published or been contracted to write a book-length work, but whose writing shows exceptional promise.” Appears to be a program for fiction and nonfiction writers only.
